It's one of my favourite films of all time, not just the decade. I think people go into it expecting something it isn't. Like how everyone I know with Netflix watches Love even though I tell them not to bother, then they moan that it's "porn".

I knew he was pissed that she came up to Marlowe's apartment, but I thought he would just slap her...

i read the book, loved it.
watched the movie and was annoyed that the aliens were more benevolent and that seemed to turn lots of cameron fans away from the film.
with the tidal wave put back the aliens are more 'cut that shit out, the only reason we dont kill you all now is you may have a redeeming feature'
execs probably had the scenes cut so they could fit more screenings in a day like they did with aliens. Film would have been a bigger hit if they diddnt fuck with it. they never learn.

I think after that Studio's didn't dare meddle with him or his movies during production. There are stories how he told execs to fuck off and just take after a suit showed up on the set of Titanic because they were over budget and behind schedule.
