What were the orcs in Moria actually doing? They just hang out

They formed a religion around the Balrog and stayed out of the war.

My assumption was that they sent out raiding parties to nearby villages combined with fishing and hunting. On their spare time they probably worshipped the Balrog (the Balrog was on the same level of creature as Sauron, albeit weaker, so it isn't surprising they'd worship it) and did orc things like arguing and fighting. We know they practice cannibalism so it's possible they occasionally ate each other for food and population control. They had their own maia to worship so it's unlikely they planned to help Sauron any time soon, though if they had made contact it's possible they could have joined forces.

Orcs enslave their own, the weaker become labors, craftsman and plantation workers. They craft crude weapons, brew a healing ale called Orc Draught and tend to the "food." There was a massive plantation in Mordor, worked by slaved orcs, that fed Suarons armies. Some of those same practices happened underground with fungus farms, bugs, vermin and occasional meat.

I always thought that these were goblins, not orcs.
