A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

I can't literally remember what I saw two years ago let alone 2014 but The Handmaiden was definitely the best film of last year.

No it's because it's a damn good filmmaking. Have you ever watched a Shakespeare play? You know what's going to happen but you watch anyway because the full range of human emotion is on display for you and you respect the ability of others to show that emotion on demand. The director of the witch did a phenomenal job in immersing the viewer in the situation and creating a believable narrative (as believable as fantasy is). From alternating crampedness in the house to unsettling openness outside, to discrepancy between the gauntness of the parents and the plumpness of the children, to coaxing out some of the greatest performances I've ever seen from child actors, it's just a good movie all around.

People should realize le plot twist isn't all there is to making a good film. Just another unsettling aspect of the 21st century that the masses can be respect something like re-watchability and instead intend for a movie to be a one-time use item.

Yes, most movies have some scenes that take place outside and some scenes that take place inside. Not every movie uses that dichotomy to this great of an extent, though. For here ( http://content.internetvideoarchive.com/content/photos/10173/554072_008.jpg ) the father has to bend his head in order to avoid hitting it on the crossbeam. And here ( http://media.philly.com/images/The-witch-movie-review.jpg ) one sees just how alone the family is. I can't recall any kind of road ever being shown near their house, either.

I don't really feel like justifying my appreciation of the movie to people who don't like it. But objections like "I knew what was going to happen" key me in to the fact that such people are not ones I want to discuss film (or art, for that matter) with, anyway. I think I care for different things.

The Invitation or The Handmaiden. Green Room was pretty rad too, but not quite on the same level.

Shin Godzilla holds special place in my heart as being the first real Toho Godzilla film I've had the opportunity to see in a packed theater, but the movie is too flawed to be considered amongst the best I saw that year.
