It's not about it being a masterpiece or not. It's about them taking half of the premise and take an interesting setting just to make it generic again. Just look at how different Light is protrayed in the Trailer alone. The manga is all about him being a psychopath with a god complex who thinks he does everything right. It's easy for me to buy Asian or white actors as playing normal anime characters, but changing the skin colour too much honestly doesn't seem to fit. If it was an African remake or something then I'd get it, but America has a ton of good white actors who could fill the role. If they wanted more diversity they should have just made L an Asian, it would fit more with his personality and everything too, plus there are fewer Asian actors, so finding a good one and letting him shine could be a way to actually help an actor get a job when he otherwise might not be able to.

It's too much of random, oh by the way here's 2 guys who are just like L and will catch Light so I can wrap up this series that I've kept going for way too long and had no real idea on how to properly finish, afterthought and wouldn't work well in a trilogy of movies if they're just brought in as suddenly as they were originally for the final.

Any negative criticism this gets, and it's already got a lot, will be blamed on the viewers being racist because L is a black guy. It's shit that he is of course, but that argument will overshadow the fact that the characters have been completely slaughtered. None of this makes sense when compared to the anime series. The real premise of Death Note is not the concept of the death note itself, but the question "if two equally extremely intelligent Mary Sues faced off against each other in a neverending battle of wits, who would win?" It's just plain fun to watch them both try to outmaneuver the other's perfect maneuvers.
