I liked Batman v Superman, because it goes against what those characters are. It takes them on in a different way that fans might hate. But it works because those characters are burnt into the pop cultural zeitgeist.
Death Note is barely known outside of the anime community (which is sad because the manga is better). So it sucks to see them fuck the characters up so badly and do the story in a weird way.
Adam Wingard said the movie would be violent without being forced. Yet he says it's a hard R. DN was never about the violent ways people died. It was about Light's sinking plight into murder.

Light knows all this information, and begins pretending like Rem, who is now dead, is coming to kill them all

After L's death, and at the start of the series, it was Light being bored as fuck. Before Light's death, it was just angstyness again.
