I liked continuity in the sense that it saved time setting up ridiculous situations

because the ball was already rolling, they could just build upon what they had done in the previous episodes, rather than starting from scratch

the only problem was that Trey & Matt never had a good grip on the Trump situation. not only did they underestimate Trump, they portrayed Trump the way the mainstream media wanted to portray Trump

with a better understanding of how Trump contrasts with Hillary and the GOP establishment, SP could attack Trump in a completely fair, balanced, and accurate way.

At the time, /tv/ tried so hard to convince itself to like these episodes because they were making fun of PC culture, but the humor just fell flat for the most part.

No, it leads to nowhere, the first episode of that season has some of the most out of character stuff ever. Not only Cartman does nothing about getting beaten to a pulp, but he does a sudden u-turn and becomes a Sjw himself. For one episode. Then out of nothing he reverts back to old himself. I don't get why, maybe they thought that having get beck to being an asshole at the end of the season would have been a problem for the jokes, but he was actually very secondary for the most part of it.
It was a mess.

Matt & Trey made Stick of Truth and became interested in the longer story format, and wanted to try it out in the show itself. They started off just with simple continuity references but in this latest season they went all the way and had practically just the one plot for the entire season. And the exact same jokes every episode. Made worse by the fact they failed to predict the election and that completely fucked up how they were originally planning on ending it

It's why they switched to topical stuff over a decade ago. Every now and then they come up with a fun story but its a lot easier to just look around and say yeah let's do that.
