What are some interesting creatures from myth and legend that have received very little love in film?

I think the Hidebehind would be the perfect candidate for a film. It's a mythical creature from lumberjacks tales that had the ability to to contort it's body so that it could hide behind even the skinniest trees. One was not able to catch more than a mere glimpse of the creature as it would always manage to hide behind trees or even the prey it was stalking, always keeping out of sight until an ambushing opportunity was found.

It would be the perfect thing to make use of those horror scenes where something quickly and unexpectedly moves in the corner of your eye. You could establish so many low-suspense shots where the thing would just move in the distance, completely unexpected and make viewers question if they saw it or not.

It's one artists interpretation, the Hidebehind is never given a physical description beyond claims that despite its abilities it's a fairly large creature.

The creature exclusively feeds on the intestines of its prey. Lumberjacks claimed it hated alcohol and that drinking it would deter the creature.

Don't know if it would technically be considered a mythical creature but I think the "self transforming machine elves" are interesting. Metaphysical alien entities that can only be seen while on strong hallucinogens would make a cool movie. The closest thing to that ive seen is probably From Beyond or the ending of 2001 Space Odyssey

This. They share the whole "you can never catch a glimpse of them" but also have the whole cursed-to-be-a-monster thing which I think could be used nicely.

Ravenous, while a good movie that I really love for the soundtrack, just didn't do the Wendigo part well enough. I want a hairy monster stalking a group of hunters or lumberjacks in a remote logging camp during the onset of winter dammit. The one with that guy with the teeth who cooked eggs on LOST was a goddamn travesty.

Also related: Tailypo. The Tailypo story would probably make a good horror-movie by just adapting the story straight.

The Popelick monster would make a good psychological horror film.

It's a cryptid described as a demonic goat man that lives under a trestle bridge over Popelick Creek Louisville Kentucky. It has the power of hypnotizing or tricking people into going on the trestle only to die by falling off or getting hit by an oncoming train. For some reason people who hear the myth always believe the trestle is abandoned and paranormal investigators try to enter it.

Basically, the legend of the creature is what sustains it. You go there trying to find it but then a train comes or you fall off the track because you're really just a dipshit who thought it was abandoned and inhabited by a goat monster.

In order to make it work as a film you'd simply have to make the self-fulfilling myth more convincing and drop implications that that creature exists while playing other mind games by trying to convince the audience and the caste that the location is abandoned.

>>
>>84408246
>>84408211
It's because of that book and movie.
Mothman was this big red eyed flying creature that showed up and then near the finale sighting that bridge collapsed.

So then you have this movie about the moth man being named Indrid Cold who is some outer-dimensional entity that showed up to deliver the premonition that the bridge would collapse

If you wanted to make a movie about the flatwoods monster, don't make it about predicting the bridge collapsing.

Some people haven't been far out in nature and have no grasp of how easy it is to get lost. Plus I'm sure lots of people fall and get knocked unconscious. Plenty of ways to get fucked. Although I'm sure plenty of young or solo hikers are murdered opportunistically.
>>
>>84408464
Because it's a weird movie. I've actually never read the book so I don't know how similar it is, but it turns two separate incidents into one concept by making the Mothman entity into an omen.

The film plays it out as if these entities like to predict disasters for kicks.

>>84408480
It was a book first, though the author wasn't the first to try and link the Mothman and the bridge together, it was a normal "correlation" phenomenon by locals saying "Wait a minute, this terrible thing happened right after people claimed they saw a winged humanoid.

No, if it was an avalanche they would have died inside of their tent, but it went like this: In Siberia group of soviet hikers made a tent for the night on the slope of mountain called "Mountain of the Dead" by native tribe, then during the night they woke up, escaped the tent by cutting it open from the inside, ran down the slope without taking their warm winter clothes with them, separated into two groups and froze to death in nearby small forest 400 m. from their tent, also their clothes were irradiated a bit, that's pretty spooky and mysterious, there are many theories ranging from CIA/KGB spy business, bears, ghosts, UFOs, angry native asian tribes, sound of the wind driving them mad (it has been noted that sound the wind in the mountains makes is very unnerving to human ears)

No, that's an urban legend, he was missing his tongue and eyes, but he also lost nearly all soft tissues on his head from lying in the snow for month and half, it wasn't cut out, but eaten by animals, also not a single of them was found anywhere near the tent, they left all their stuff there including warm clothes and made a run down the slope of mountain to a small forest

Nobody knows mothman's endgame, it's never made clear. Hell, the whole point of the film is that the mothmans are extradimensional entities that can see the future, and that their motivations are incomprehensible to humans. The professor that Richie G meets late in the 2nd act gives this whole monologue about a man up on a skyscraper being able to see farther than people on the ground, and yada yada. Hell, we never even know if mothman is good or bad in the movie. He might be trying to warn / save people, for all we can tell.

I thought it was fantastic, but it's kindof a slow burn. Not for everyone.

The problem with that is you have to make it up completely from scratch. Because the entire source material for Jabberwocky is two lines from Lewis Carrol. (and one drawing of it that we know he approved of).

Talking to the dead isn't hard.

It's getting them to answer that's the tricky bit.

A bunch of the spooky stories on x would probably make good horror movies, especially skinwalkers.

Have there been any skinwalker movies?
