Yes. Many of them actually predate Saw, with some going back to underground horror circles in 1980s Japan.

I'm not concerned about gore, or how it may effect people watching or any of that sensualist bullshit, because it's fucking fictional.

What I do notice is that all of these films are fucking awful. They have shit thread bare stories, or in Saw's case don't make a lick of God damn sense. They're universally directed abysmally. And they require no talent what so ever.

It's just an excuse to herd these victims in a room or whatever and kill them off graphically, but to what purpose? It's just stupid, all of it.

torture porn isn't exactly new. Herschell Gordon Lewis went much further in his time. Like all gimmicky horror films, they're mainly curiosities that exist to primarily allow the filmmakers and crew members to learn their craft. Horror films are film school.

first one was good indeed, sequels just dragged it down a bunch

series went like this:

first movie - low budget, well crafted, good acting, worked around a cool premise, meta layer being implicit

second movie - more money, shittier execution anyway, trying to further the premisde, directly adressing the meta layer

third movie - taking the premise to absurdity, establishing characters and background story, literally spelling out the morale of the story

rest of the series - fading into shitty thriller with excessive gore trying to give it elaborate "meaning" by connocting a shitty pseudo logic (so basically matrix 2+3)


sadly cashing in on a name has become the status quo for modern day kino
good standalone movies being turned to shit by making a bunch of retarded sequels (hello guardians of the galaxy 2)

The first saw was pretty good. Not perfect but solid. The sequels were all shite outside of a few neat traps here and there. The constant forced twists in every film actually made them more predictable and tiresome to watch.
Hostel was just mediocre. if you've seen anything that was labeled a video nasty way back when then you've seen all Hostel has to offer elsewhere and better.

I love everything Saw. Honestly the goreporn is almost irrelevant to me. The traps are cool from a creativity standpoint but otherwise I don't care much about the gore


But I love the plot threads, the differences between the Jigsaw's, etc

First three Saw movies I thought were all really good. After that there was a noticeable drop in quality

The structure is interesting too. It always starts as any standard movie, but you always have a 2 min long dump of keikaku at the end showing that nothing was like it seemed. I think it's much more entertaining and interesting than just having a super hero beat up thugs between two shitty jokes. Nolan likes to do that kind of thing too in his movies (Memento, Prestige...)
Not to mention how the movie succeeded in establishing a coherent visual identity of obstructed corridors, laying tools, obscure mechanisms and stuff like that.
