The way I saw it is that he's still a Black Lodge spirit and probably still needs it for sustenance, he's just unwilling to cause pain and suffering to humans for it. So he either leaves that to BOB or the arm, and the fact that he seems so unstable while possessing Gerard may be a result of that.

I haven't read the Secret History, but one thing I never understood about MIKE is his relation to Phillip Gerard the shoe salesman. We see BOB's true form, as played by Frank Silva, separately from those he is possessing, but MIKE is always seen as Gerard. I thought was just his vessel, in the same way that BOB uses humans as his own vessel... but MIKE always appears as Gerard. Is that his true form? How come we've never seen what MIKE looks like outside of Gerard?
