>mfw everybody knows deep down that the eagles are a legitimate huge plothole
>>
why didn't they just fly?
>>
>>84352741
The eagles were busy dealing with shit in their own territory.
>>
>mfw op doesn't know what a plothole is

I can't even be bothered posting a pic, this is more than (You) deserve
>>
>>84352741
the eagles would have been killed by the big black flying things

if you use hobbits you can sneak in, which they did
>>
this is the worst maymay
>>
>>84352857
no one knew the fell beasts existed in the first film
>>
>>84352741
Eagle can't read maps, they wouldn't know how to get there
>>
The eagles aren't animals but sentient creatures.
They would have just as easily been tempted by the ring as any man.
It's almost like you don't even get the basic theme of LOTR.
>>
>>84353127

How do you put a ring on a wing?
>>
>>84352741
The eagles feared they would be corrupted by the ring
>>
>>84352741
>Giant eagle flies over Mordor
>Sauron immediately notices as soon as they fly over the black gate and sends the Witch King to kill it and bring the ring back
Wow, nice plan
>>
>>84352741
>>84352753
It's because the eagles take it easy. Frodo and crew were already gone, and the eagles don't typically act until there's a peaceful easy feeling, which wasn't possible with the ring present. The eagles are skittish, and they considered that the ring gave Frodo so-called lying eyes. Despite that, the king of the eagles, a desperado, said "One of these nights, when the witchy woman sleeps, I will take it to the limit. I'll be a midnight flyer, and by the tequila sunrise, I'll rescue Frodo and give him the best of my love."

That eagle was brutally killed by the other eagles, because he broke the rule to "take it easy."
>>
Additionally I think one of main themes of the book were people who could intervene and end evil before it took root, but don't for various as some kind of lesson about inaction
>>
>>84353192
>by the tequila sunrise
what did he mean by this
>>
>>84353190

All the ring wraiths are abroad looking for the ring. It's the perfect time to fly the ring in. Right over their heads.
>>
>>84353165
talons negro

the ring also adjusts to fit whatever
>>
>>84353165
Did you miss the part where the ring changes size to the wearer?
Also obviously they'd put it on their very large talons.
>>
>>84353165
Remember Boromir was tempted by the ring without wearing it.
>>
>>84353190
bravo, because as we all know the only way to fly over the mountains of mordor is over the fucking black gates

seriously are you retarded
>>
>eagles fly to mordor
>sauron sees them 100 miles away
>sends the nazguls and the orcs shoot them down the if they get close to the ground
>???
>sauron has the ring
Epic
>>
>>84353225
there's still the ocean of orc archers
>>
>>84353245
>>84353249

Well that size-changing property is VERY convenient....
>>
>give ring to eagle
>sauron immediately corrupts ring bearer
>eagle flies straight to sauron

You think you are wise, Shekelberg, yet for all your subtleties you have not wisdom. Do you think the shareholders of the White Tower™ are blind? I have seen more than you know. With your left hand you would use me as a write-off against Mordor©. And, with your right, you seek to do a hostile takeover! I know who files with Théoden of Rohan, LLC. Oh, yes. Words have reached my ears of this Aragorn, inheritee of Arathorn, and I tell you now: I will not bow to this investor from Wall Street, last of a ragged corporation long bereft of assets!

Authority is not given to you to deny the return of the majority shareholder, CFO!

The stocks of Gondor Inc. are mine! And no others'!
>>
>>84353284
it also adjusts it's weight on the fly too! its almost like its magic or something!!
>>
>>84353289
that's interesting because not a single person who wears the ring wants to bring it to sauron. gollum had it for 500 years and just hid in a cave
>>
>>84353257
Sauron would've noticed no matter which way they came. I was using the black gates to make a point. It stands if it's the mountains or whatever. The point is Mordor is a fortress crawling with enemies. Flying into it is very visible and there's no way in hell that Eagle is making it to Mount Doom unscathed. The only reason they did in the book was because Sauron and his army were distracted.
>>
>>84353165
it goes on the talon you ninny
>>
>>84353284
Yeah it's almost like how a ring sized to fit a Maiar can also fit a man.
>>
>>84353289
Just have Frodo hold the ring and the eagle hold Frodo
>>
>>84353261
>>84353268

You fly high high above the clouds and come straight down from directly above Mt Doom. Hot drop right at the entrance.

Flawless.
>>
>fly you fools
what did he mean by that?

>>84353317
because the ring wanted to hide

then frodo is corrupted and wants to take it to sauron at the end

they are eagles. they fly. the only defense sauron has against that is the fellbeasts and archers.

just fucking fly higher than the arrows and that's pretty much it, the fellbeasts can't teleport so who gives a shit about them

there are a hundred different ways the ring itself could foil that plan

You guys realise the caldera of Mount Doom is inactive, right? You need to enter through the open cut door in the side to access the lava. That's where your plan fails because that door has a thousand orcs in front of it the moment an Eagle comes into view on the horizon
>>
>>84353357
stop making shit up. frodo says the ring is "his," he's not bringing it to sauron like some fucking ring bearing ups person
>>
>>84353381

Put the ring in a locked box and leave the key in Rivendell, so once you finish the eagle hot drop you are immune from putting it on even if you want to. Then just throw the box into the lava.

Kind of. The Ring kind of amplifies the innate personality (potency) and desires of the person wearing it. So when Isildur wore it to try and escape the ambush, it turned him invisible because he wanted to get away. The reason it seems to cause Hobbits to turn invisible is because they innately don't want to be seen in dangerous situations so they can sneak away.

If Gimli had put that shit on, who knows what would've happened.

That's a good question, you'd think that beings who are immortal would advance in technology. I think the answer lies in the immortality though. The elves having a hierarchy with the oldest at the top presumeably, they don't want to change but stay the same. Similar to how old people are hesitant to adapt to new technologies. The old elves are in power and effectively halting progress. Saruman showed some interest in futurization with his industrial approach in making Uruks and making gunpowder.
Saruman is the future, he's the good guy.

Are there pixies in Middle Earth?
>>
>>84355884
I mean they're both immortal earth spirits so I don't think it matters too much.
>>
>>84355993

Pixies was the name of one of the many Sprite-kinds of ancient Arda, as recorded in the earliest forms of Tolkien's Mythology.
It is not clear as to what they were or did but were probably similar to all the other the Sprites, who were known for dwelling in or close to the many landforms and for growing things in the early days of Arda.

Their civilization only looks roughly medieval at first glance. Their advanced crafts, much of which are what we would consider magic, enable them to have standards of living comparable to ours today. Also, them being immortal makes squeezing the maximum quality of life out of every single year less important to them than it is to us. An elf can spend 100 years living in some shack by a swamp if he wants to, it's not like he would be wasting his whole life by doing so.

Honesty, I've watched LotR like 1.5 times and even I know this meme is silly.

When Gandalf was grey wizard he just didnt have that much magic power for it. He summoned AN eagle as his last resort in Isengard. I bet he didnt even know he could pull that off.

He knows that people want to destroy him, and the means destroying the ring. Even if he knows that no one could willingly destroy the ring once their in Mt. But you're wrong.

Gandalf says after the battle of pellenor fields.

"The Enemy, of course, has long known that the Ring is abroad, and that it is borne by a hobbit. He knows now the number of our Company that set out from Rivendell, and the kind of each of us. But He does not yet perceive our purpose clearly. He supposes that we were all going to Minas Tirith; for that is what he would him-self have done in our place. And according to his wisdom it would have been a heavy stroke against his power. Indeed He is in great fear, not knowing what might one may suddenly apear, wielding the Ring, and assailing him with war, seeking to cast him down and take his place. That we should wish to cast him down and have no one in his place is not a thought that occurs to his mind. That we should try to destroy the Ring itself has not yet entered into his darkest dream."

Sauron created the ring and knew how it would affect people. He knew how people would react to the power of the ring (aside from Hobbits as he didn't understand them) and presumed that the only thing one would do if they had the ring was try to wield it. This is why Aragorn going to the black gate was such a great decision; the only one stupid of powerful enough to openly attack Sauron at his own turf must of been influenced by the ring.

Side note, theoretically Gandalf or Aragorn would of been powerful enough to wield the ring to its full potential though and Sauron did fear that.
>>
>>84362629
>>84362752
Ah okay. Well Gandalf only had his suspicions and Saruman told him the One Ring was lost for good so he trusted him at the time. As for Isildur's account, it was hidden away in Gondor's archives or whatever.
>>

Gandalf knew it was one of the great rings because Bilbo wasn't outwardly aging but otherwise didn't appear to be changed much. Also, Gandalf only occasionally came around the Shire in the years between The Hobbit and LotR. He hadn't been seen in years prior to Bilbo's party.
>>
>>84363101
Which is more evidence that Sauron was certain Aragorn had the ring
>>
>>84362971
So if it was so easy to BTFO him why didn't aragorn use the ring, BTFO sauron and his armies and then throw it in the lava?

>>
Why didn't wizards attach the ring to an object in space and slingshot it into the volcano at many times the speed of light?
>>
>>84363443
But isildur was weak willed and fell for the ring before even wearing it, aragorn didn't seem to care at all about it even in close proximity (like isildur was), instead they go in a suicide missions that had a lot of chances to fail instead of fighting sauron and his armies back when they could've have done so easily?
>>
>>84363331
Even with the ring Aragorn's army would have still lost at the black gate. The ring tricks people into believe they are more powerful than they are. Sauron had the ring and was still defeated in battle several times (captured by the Numenoreans, battle of the last alliance).

It's like you fail to grasp the entire concept of the ring and the themes of the novel as a whole. That or you're just trolling, in which case good job on getting me to type this shit out

Aragorn and Gandalf were both wise enough to realize that destroying the Ring was the only real course of action to take. Aragorn wouldn't have been able to claim it, use it and then just toss it in the lava. The One Ring eventually corrupts the user no matter if they try to use it for good purposes.

It never corrupted Bilbo. And the other dude got killed for unrelated reasons, he's not shown turning into an asshole or anything. Gollum did turn a bit weird, but it's not like he tried to conquer the world.
>>
>>84363331
Because the inherent nature of the ring is corruption. Even if you had the will power to claim it from sauron it would STILL turn all your works to the ultimate benefit of evil.
Also the ring will not let itself be destroyed. You would get to the cracks of doom, and come up with some excuse for keeping it around.

All of that is ignoring the fact that Aragorn leading the suicide attack at the battle of morannon. It was a ruse to make sauron THINK aragorn had the ring and was waiting to use it as a secret weapon. The point was to challenge sauron in a way that he would marshal every force he had in mordor to crush aragorn and reclaim his ring so frodo and sam would have a slim chance of getting to the mountain.

I just told you a part of it, but i'll see if I can elaborate more.

The ring in a sense has free will, though it's loyalty is to Sauron because that's who created it. All the actions the ring takes are to return to its master, or prevent its destruction; it hides with Gollum for 500 years waiting for Sauron to return and when it does it leaves Gollum because it knows it has a better chance of reaching Sauron if it can be picked up by a Golbin (but its believed Eru intervened and had Bilbo pick it up instead). Other examples are trying to get Frodo to wear the ring in the presence of the Nazgul to make it easier for the Nazgul to find frodo. And gee whiz even at Mt Doom it manages to convince Frodo he is powerful enough to wield the ring against Sauron to prevent its own destruction.

The rings actual powers are rather vague though, the invisibility thing really only happens when someone weak wears it like Frodo or Bilbo, whereas Sauron doesn't become invisible when wearing it. The ring also grants the user the ability to corrupt and control the lesser rings and those rings in turn grant their wearers the power to dominate their people (hence why he gave them to powerful men and dwarves after the whole elf thing didn't work out).

The ring is a tool though and can be wielded by anyone powerful enough to do so, Galadriel, Gandalf and Aragorn all could of potentially used the ring to destroy Sauron, however in doing so the ring would corrupt the wearer (as it is still sentient, and inherently evil) into becoming the next dark lord as the ring could achieve its goals with or without Sauron
>>
>>84363789
Bilbo and Gollum only had the Ring though. They occasionally used it for turning invisible but they never really laid claim to it in order to wield it like Aragorn would have had to do to use it against Sauron and his army.

He spergs out on gandalf and later frodo. And when he's leaving the shire he drops the line "I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread." because he was feeling the effects.
Gandalf also muses that since bilbo came across the ring honestly (he found it in the dark, and then by rights "won" it from Gollum in the riddle game) so its effects were less pronounced.
Comepared to Smeagol, who murdered his brother/cousin/bff(?) Deagol, to get the ring and ended up turning into gollum over the grief.
The worst thing bilbo ever did with the ring was lie to his friends about it, and undoubtedly watched some thicc hobbit bois and bitches showering.
The implication is that the ring finding bilbo in that very specific moment was Eru stacking the deck in the favor of good, unbeknownst to all. The whole story of the ring, especially the involvement of the fellowship, is Eru's third theme manifesting in the "reality" of middle earth.
Its literally deaus ex machina, but its foreshadowed at the beginning of the lore. All the contributing tales are just the realization of Eru's song of creation played out.

If you go solely off the films, the eagles can probably be construed as a plot hole, but the books make it pretty clear what's going on. I think. I haven't read them in forever

>soloed Pelennor Fields without the ghosts
Not quite. The tide turns against rohan, eomer goes full klingon in one of my favorite parts of the book. Right before aragorn flies the flag and saves the day with the 40 dunedain rangers and the sons of elrond.
Its a fucking shame we didn't get the grey company in the movies since they pretty much did what the ghosts in the movie did. The book mentions that each member of the grey company was worth an entire army on the battlefield apiece.
You could make the battle of pelenor fields its own movie, with prince imrahel and based swan knights.

Why did Sauron make the ring? He seemed to be doing fine without it, even better than when he had it in fact.
Why did destroying the ring killed him?

There were orc Anti-Air batteries within Mordor. Not until the Battle of the Black Gate did the batteries become unmanned.

There. Solved.

There'd be no story if they used the eagles, therefore we don't use the eagles so we can have a more interesting story.

Before he had it he had big daddy morgoth to back him up. After based tulkas throws him outside of time and space sauron fucks off and hides, and for a while he tries to be a nice guy until hes told to report back to valinor for his part in the last few ages.
He comes up with a plan. He disguises himself and travels to the elven kingdoms offering to teach them new smith craft and magic. Gil Galad and Cirdan tell him to fuck off because they can smell a rat. Celebrimbor of Eregion, a noldor descended from feanor and kin directly, one of the greatest craftsmen of his age, was tempted.
Together he and sauron forged nine rings to gift to men and seven for the dwarves. In secret celebrimbor never trusted him and takes what he learned from sauron and created three elven rings, free of the taint of sauron. That he gave to the three elven kingdoms. Gil Galad king of the noldor, galadriel of lothlorien, and based Cirdan of the grey havens.
Of course sauron's ultimate plan was to forge a controling device, the one ring. To create the thing he had to pour part of himself into it to power it.
The elven rings were untouched and revealed sauron's betrayal before they became his thralls.
Eregion gets wiped out in the war, numenor gets involved, getting caught was part of his plan, causes massive butthurt by getting atlantis sunk, comes back to middle earth, starts more shit, battle of last alliance, isildur gets the ring, the rest is in the movie.
>>
>>84365394
so the elven rings weren't even forged by sauron? then what the fuck is this?

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
>>
>>84365394
He controlled the witch kings without the ring in the movie. And that still doesn't explain why throwing it into a volcano would kill Sauron. It is only a part of his power that got separated a long time ago, and as you said a separate entity at that point.

And midgard is literally middle earth. Tolkien's stated purpose for creating his universe was because there was no true english mythology. So he created one, like any mythology, its informed by its neighbors so theres plenty of influence from other northern european pantheons and creation stories.

He taught them how to make them, he did not himself make them.

Destroying the One Ring didn't kill Sauron exactly but it weakened him so much that he's never able to take physical form or do harm again. He's just a spirit trapped in Middle-earth.
>>
>>84365534
He was still on numenor when it sank, and eru broke the world. He was practically smited so hard he lost his ability to take a pleasing shape. Before this he was known for his ability to change forms, getting btfo'd by dogs and women, and epic rap battles.
I always took him losing his shapeshifting ability and returning as a terrible black lord as him getting dealt with by his superiors, and he would have "died" had it not been for the ring safely hidden back in mordor, which was a physical vessel his spiritual form was tied to. No matter how many times you destroyed him physically, he would always be able to manifest again because he had an anchor.
Compare it to when saruman is murdered, a smoke or haze rises from his body, takes the vague form of a man, who looks to the west, and then gets dispersed by a wind from a strong wind that smelled of the sea.
All the ainur were immortal spirits, and could take solid form at will, but I think for all but the valar that ability is a privilege that can be revoked. They cant affect the physical world as it is, but if saruman had tripped and broken his neck after being a dick he wouldn't have been reborn like gandalf.
Sauron has the ring anchoring him, morgoth was trapped in a physical form by the first age. Balrogs could be killed despite being maiar.

they're the muslims of middle earth
>>
>>84365485
Because though sauron didn't make them, celebrimbor was following the his recipe.
They had none of the negative side effects like turning you into a wraith or being a the king turbo jew of the turbo jews, but was still able to be controlled with the one ring.
This let the elf lords use their rings (as long as he doesn't have the one ring) to preserve their respective havens in rivendale and lothlorien.
Cirdan gave his to gandalf because he'd need it more, and the grey havens were protected by ulmo and as the most western part of middle earth it would be the last place to diminish.

Tolkien magic is supposed to be subtle, like causing natural disasters. Remember that Tolkien Wizards are like angels in mortal form and that their magic is more like divine intervention.

>>84366688
But in the book, the ghost army doesn't come to the Pelennor Fields. Their oath was fulfilled when they helped Aragorn and company take the ships.
