If we return to the first scene, what do you suppose the conclusion must have been? Obviously, the poor man had been sent to prison or executed, it is not shown but heavily implied. The chances of the man surviving the whole ordeal was close to none.
Now, in this scene, the situation is reversed. It's obvious that Varga is only playing the submissive role, while Coon thinks she got him. After he loses interest, he reveals his cards, while the officer assumes this is nothing but a futile bluff.
The tables have turned, thus it is not preposterous to suppose that the conclusions would be likewise, reversed.

It actually seems that his father and stepfather are more involved in his day to day life.
