The elements in Avatar were cyclical. By the rules of the universe, the next avatar would necessarily be of the Water Tribes. Water tribesmen were brown, which we already knew because two of the main characters from the original series were of Water Tribe origin.

But the villain motives making sense was one of the best thing about Korra. People were even sympathising with them, they made that much sense. Especially Zaheer. I'd've sided with Amon too
