Ok so I've been wondering why nobody ever talks about this movie.

Has nobody seen this except me?

Please go watch it for fucks sake, it's one of the best movies of our time
>>
>>84227632
it's one if those hidden gens that hardly gets mentioned like "Awakenings".

It's because Hollywood hates it
>>
>>84227632
I saw it.It was kino I agree
>>
Plenty people saw it because of the screener..

It doesn't get mentioned much here because it isn't a very meme worthy movie.
>>
>>84227632
Good film, but doesn't really achieve anything. It's just a retread of stuff Bergman was dealing with sixty years ago.
But again, that doesn't mean it's not good, almost everything is a retread at best
>>
>>84227632
The movie had very few and limited screenings world wide.
I live in a first world country and the movie was only shows for 3 days.
They decided not to do a big release nor do big promo for it.

I think that was a good choice because it's a very unusual movie for retarded capeshit viewers.

But it is a great movie if you appreciate actual kino qnd not meme shit.
>>
Is it another Kundun?
>>
>>84227632
Good films about Christianity get shunned from (((Pedowood))). It got nominated for one award while gay nigger porn gets Best Picture. I hate this Berenstain timeline because, as you said, it is one of the best movies of our time.
>>
>>84227632
I really did not like it, felt too preachy and far too lush for what it was trying to portray
>>
I only watch movies in theaters, I missed it cause I was out of country, so I'll have to wait until they have another showing somewhere.
>>
>>84227632
It's the best Scorsese movie for me but I can understand why they did not want to show this movie to the masses.

Modern film audiences have forgotten how to enjoy a slower paced movie.

Terrence Malick should be doing the same but he releases his movies to mass audience and that's why they flop, because Falso Promotion.

This movie did not have false promotion,
it is what it promised to be and it was great.
>>
>>84227900

didn't feel preachy at all. i felt sympathetic to the japanese after the main padre, forgot his name, was caught. fucking arrogant christians could have avoided the killings and touturings of innocent japanese if they just fucked off from their island nation.
>>
>>84227632
It's an arthouse movie, that's why.
But it's a great one, it is not arthouse in a pretentious way like Terrence Malick.
It truly is probably the best crafted movie of 2017.

Scorses puts everything he has learned into this movie,
technically the movie is on a god's level.
The Cinematography is very high tier.

Can you guys explained what you liked about it?

I thought it was good. But nothing special.

Pros:
>Amazing cinematography
>Good acting
>Good sound track
>Good set design
>Interesting story.
>Has a message
>Morally ambiguous since the Japanese can be sympathized with

Cons:
>Long as fuck
>Message is blunt and pretty simple
>Autistic Japanese Christian constantly returning for confession.

Its still very good technically speaking, but I just didn't find the themes that compelling. I can only go so long hearing about faith and spirituality.
>>
>>84227632

It probably is great, but in 2017 I just can't find the time to watch a movie about white people being persecuted.
>>
It was boring.
>>
it's shit. Scorc just needs to retire already. he's kilked his legacy
>>
>>84228016
If you thought that the character of Kichijiro was annoying you clearly misunderstood the theme.
>>
>>84228108
see >>84228016

Its objectively not shit.
>>
I really liked it. Kino.

I kinda wish there were more christian films with this tone and approach.

The one thing that was plebby was needing to have the literal Christ voice say "step on me". It was a bit too much.
>>
>>84228016
In the age of 99% of the shit coming out of hollywood being capeshit and remakes I thought a 3 hour long journey about persecuted missionaries was just what we needed. And your pros list drastically outweighs the cons list.
>>
>>84228166
I thought I understood his purpose, I just still found it annoying.

But what are your thoughts? Seriously, I saw it this week and was looking for opinions about it.
>>
>>84228016
>>Autistic Japanese Christian constantly returning for confession.
That was some much needed comedy relief, and it really demonstrated the point that Neeson made later - that the Japanese don't get Christianity, they've just adapted it to their own pagan beliefs.
>>
>>84228203
That's why I liked it bruh. I thought it was good for sure, I just was looking for a tad bit more. Maybe I'm too critical now.

I haven't rated anything 8/10 or more for like 3 months.

I kind of feel like a movie has to be a bit more than technically great to counteract such a long ass running time. It seems to me that it was very much a novel adaptation because it relied so heavily on exposition and voiceover.
>>
It got ruined by the ending where it got awful preachy, sentimental and shallow. Its like they didnt have the balls to leave the audience feeling like shit, so in the end they didn't let anything ambiguous to the characters.
It would actually improve the film a lot if they cut out the last 5 seconds.
>>
>>84228181
I actually didn't mind the christ voice too much, thought it could have been handled a bit better as far as straddling the line on whether it was a delusion or not though

my gripe was with the last shot. total shit
>>
I left feeling physically exhausted after watching this. Not because of the runtime but the because the scenes really took a lot of you emotionally.
>>
>>84228267
the entire idea of whether or not it was Jesus that told him to kneel or if it was just his conscious was ambiguous.
>>
>>84228298
>>84228181
>>84228267
Has anyone got a theory about voiceovers?

I thought i remembered reading someones review on letterboxd saying that the voiceovers were strategically placed in order to emphasize the silence of God or the noise being made by nature. To try and accentuate his isolation or something?

I'd definitely rate it higher if there was something like that going on.
>>
i found it kind of boring.
>>
>>84228209
It was about not letting piety be yet another vehicle for vanity. Andrew Garfield's character was intoxicated by the idea of being some kind of religious martyr, and was therefore unrighteous in his decision to not blaspheme and not save the other Christians. Sometimes we must sin to be good. Sinning is inevitable anyways because we are human. It is why God forgives, and why Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross. It is the greater sin to be selfish and pretend that one is acting in the name of God. It's why Kichijiro is in the right. He uses the sacrament of confession and he has the god-given right to.
>>
>>84228420
That's what the whole movie was about. How Christians deal with God being silent while they are being tortured.
>>
>>84228209
I also think that the theme being blunt is a positive aspect. It is reminiscent of Kurosawa's Kagemusha, which is yet another three-hour Japanese film that's explicitly about not being intoxicated by ideas of martyrdom and glory.
>>
>>84228420
when the voiceovers hit, there is no other sound. this is in stark contrast to the entirety of the rest of the movie. To say hes blocking everything else out and focusing entirely upon this inner voice.

There's easily some bullshit here about how this could mean god is speaking to him, but you'd have to be retarded to lean that way.
>>
It probably would have been better to have less voiceover

Holy shit. The first serious kino discussion I've seen on /tv/ in all of 2017.

Silence was great for many reasons that other anons have already touched on. I went to see it with my jittery ADHD cousin and even he was riveted enough that the extremely slow pace didn't bother him.

I did think incorporating the actual voice of Christ was fucking meh though.. like it was bordering on cringe for a second and such a shame because the rest of the film is pretty impeccable in all aspects.
>>
>>84228714
that wasn't the actual voice of christ you total moron
>>
>>84228016
It's imperfect and I don't think any of us are putting it in the GOAT conversation, but it's definitely very good, even great if you find the themes relatable.

Book is great too.
>>
Anyone ever watch the 1971 one?
>>
>>84227632
normal humans watched it when it first came out IN THE CINEMA. degenerate
>>
Absolutely did not need the voiceover and the exposition was unnecessary too. I'd love to see a 'minimalist' edit with just the praying, key events, and Japanese w/no subtitles. I think it needs to be stripped down so much that I'd argue even filming it in colour was a mistake. It's a good core idea but you can feel the Hollywood in it.
>>
>>84228016
>Autistic Japanese Christian constantly returning for confession.

My take on this was that that guy represented most people. Like how you know you shouldn't do something (masturbate to traps, for example), but you still do it anyway and then regret and vow to never to do it again, then lo and behold, you find yourself doing it again. Him constantly betraying his faith is an extreme example, but I'm sure you think of examples from your own life when you've done something again when you told yourself you wouldn't.
>>
>>84227632
For sure one of if not the best movies of last year, someone brought their baby to see it in the theater and it cried a lot of the time.
>>
>>84227632
Thx yify. All you days are the same. Once it gets released there it's talked about for a week.
>>
>>84227632
キノですよ。
>>
>>84228016
>>Message is blunt and pretty simple
Disagree with you there pal. The movie is an interrogation of faith and tradition which questions whether a foundation of belief and commitment are actually essential for them to have. If the answer to that question is the message, then I would consider the 'message' of the movie to be very ambiguous.
>>
>>84229111
Voice overs are so hollywood its retarded, amirite?
