ITT: we talk about Very special episodes.

These were some of the best things that were ever on TV. From the Happy Days episode where the black guy comes to stay with them and the mom is all racist and says shit about watermelons and the cops arrest the guy for being black at night, to the two part episode of All In the Family where Edith gets raped on her Birthday, to my personal favorite: The Bicycle Man.

>In this very special two part episode of Diff'rent Strokes, Arnold and Dudley become friends with the owner of a local bicycle shop named Henry, unaware that he is a pedophile looking for his next victim.

Michael Jackson learned to give kids "Jesus juice" to loosen them up for a dicking from watching that episode. I liked the episodes where Arnold smoked crack and Sam got kidnapped and Kimberley got kidnapped too on separate occasions. Seriously what the fuck was up with that show?
>>
>>84226476
I liked the Facts of Life episode where the 30 year old gril lost her virginity
>>

>Sam got kidnapped

That's a good one. The Kimberly kidnapping episode just made me horny.

Everybody was getting kidnapped in the 80's.
>>
Another good one: The episode of Mister Belvedere where the kid gets, you guessed it, kidnapped and molested.
>>
>tfw this shit tier board is too busy arguing about capeshit and politics to discuss great TV like when Laura from Family Matters got NIGGER spray painted on her locker

What about the episode of Family Ties where Justine Bateman's Uncle keeps fondling her and open mouth kissing her and she tells her parents and they're like "Hey, stop molesting our daughter or we're gonna get mad." and he's like "lolokay" and the episode ends and they never speak of it again like the script was written by Tommy Wiseau? there was also a Facts of Life where some perv was taking swimsuit pics of the girls. Mrs. Garret even used the word "child pornography"

>Diff'rent Strokes featured some very special episodes that involved child molestation, child pornography, pedophilia, hitchhiking, kidnapping, sexual assault, epileptic seizure, bullies, racism, bulimia, drunk driving and drug abuse.

>The Facts of Life , which was a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes, often featured very special episodes that involved teen suicide, teenage marriage, breast cancer, abortion, cheating (relationship), divorce, illiteracy, hearing problems, prostitution, a teenage mother, interracial marriage and cerebral palsy.

Holy fuck. Weren't these sitcoms?
>>
>>84228382
Anon we are all living in the very special episode where little Tommy starts hanging out on the internet with a bunch of cyberbullies
>>
>>84228659

Family Ties was similar - aside from the Tom Hanks alcoholism story, there was Alex's best friend killing himself, leading to a two-part avant-garde shitfest of high melodrama.
>>
>>84228717

Well, it was a very different little Tommy that is the key to understanding 70s/80s television - old, but good for anyone who's not familiar.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Westphall
>>
>>84228262
Drugs and molestation fearmongering were huge in the 80's because of Nancy Reagan's Just Say No campaign and the highly publicized kidnappings like Adam Walsh. I don't know if it worked and helped kids avoid this shit, but personally I was molested and I still do drugs sometimes and I watched all of these shows.

Tommy was in St. Elsewhere, which spawned characters all over the place, and the show took place in his mind, according to the theory.

Ursula, Phoebe's sister on Friends, was a character on Mad About You.
>>
>>84229174

Not really - most of the, er, extrapolations, happen after Tommy's autistic moment of television glory in the series finale. The stuff about how it branches into Homicide: LotS and X-Files, for example.

He was autistic, which was a skeleton key to justify the theory - no screeching, just universe-building.

After All in the Family (and to a lesser extent, M*A*S*H), a lot of sitcoms felt a need to occasionally tackle "contemporary social issues" seriously, humor be damned.

The supposed "family" shows in the earlier time-slots were actually far more strongly associated with this phenomenon than were the more "adult" sitcoms airing in the later evening.

As that type of sitcom largely died out in the mid-to-late '90s, so too did the "very special episode."
>>
I watched a rerun of Good Times the other day where JJ thinks he has VD and meets a pre fame Jay Leno at the clinic who has dick fungus.

The best "very special episode" ever was on Roseanne when Jackie gets beaten by her boyfriend and Dan finds out and beats the shit out of him. I can't find the end clip where he gets arrested and walks out of the house with fried chicken in his mouth like a boss but it's great. I'd say when he admits his mom was crazy and starts crying is one of the best too but it's way too sad and Goodman is a damn good actor so it seems too real.

After watching "An Open Secret," the Diff'rent Strokes episode about the pedophile just deeply disturbs me and destroys me.

I know we joke about shit like pedos and CP on 4chan but if there's any true, true evil in this world it's monsters who prey on children or worse - kidnap, trade and sell, and engage in sex acts with them.

Also, if you haven't see "An Open Secret" it's a documentary about the rampant pedophilia and "casting couch" for kids in Hollywood. /tv/ related. Highly recommended. It's on YouTube.

>>84229633
I remember Kate and Allie, but I'm old. It was kind of on the fringe between the family stuff and the more risqué adult stuff. Things like Night Court and Cheers didn't tend to do the special episode thing.

And 90210 wasn't a sitcom. Dramas have always done the "topical"/"social-awareness" thing. Having sitcoms do it was mostly a '70s/'80s/early-'90s thing.

>>84230242
Roseanne was arguably one of the shows that contributed to killing the whole phenomenon. By treating difficult topics as a matter of routine, rather than restricting them to contrived, one-off "very special episodes" the incidents of which would never be mentioned again, it both normalized the subject matter, and helped to demonstrate just how artificial and formulaic the former practice had been.

bullied kid brings a gun to a school function and shoots static's best friend and sidekick.

there's also another episode where static goes to richie's house for the first time and richie's dad is racist as fuck.

I prefer the one where Rose thinks she might have AIDS and Sophia paints R's on Rose's coffee mugs so she won't drink after her and get AIDS.

I think the broadcast rules were different back then to. Certain public networks/timeslots had to make a quota of "educational" programming.

Didnt George Cloony play the abusive boyfriend? He was a regular on the early seasons.
>>
>>84233221
No, it was a different guy. Parker was his name I think.

got a little tony soprano vibe off Goodman from that one.

You're right. I think Clooney played a dude named booker or some shit. Funny what you recall since I havent seen an episode in at least 20 years.
Great show for it's time though.

Reminder Arnold left Dudley behind to get the shit raped out of him by the Bicycle Man. Worst fuckin friend ever. The cops busted in there and Dudley had his o ring eviscerated, meanwhile Arnold was like lol who cares.
>>

If anyone doesn't recognize him Bicycle Man is Gordon Jump who was the station manager on WKRP in Cincinnati.

Roseanne succeeded because they really felt like a family but I think John Goodman really nailed the shit out of that role. He was genuinely terrifying at times

Oh shit that's the doc I was just talking about here >>84234785. Fucking scary stuff. Also how with all the evidence and pictures and testimony they have about Bryan Singer being involved with these people is he not getting arrested like yesterday? He must have some real dirt on some high ranking people. I bet he was diddled by even bigger directors and officials when he was a kid, he looks like a twink like they all do, and knows where the bodies are buried so no one can touch him.
>>
>>84235065

Do yourself a favor and totally skip the last season and pray they retcon it with the new limited series that's coming out so the ending isn't the worst thing that ever aired on TV other than the finale of Dexter.

Fallen Angel was responsible for my first boner. I remember thinking as a kid that it must be one of those rated X movies I heard about.

It's on YouTube (just google "Fallen Angel 1981").
>>
I thought Very Special Episodes were the funniest, because they were mostly just the sitcom writers trying to be dramatic and falling flat on their face. I also love it when teen dramas do it, like when Glee had the episode where the Downs syndrome girl shot up the school, or all of Degrassi.
>>
>>84232582
That is a cool animation.
>>
>>84236517
Degrassi had so much of those that I just figured it was Canadians being leafy about everything.

My dad told me that it was common for vans with curtains would snatch up kids in his town growing up in the 70s. He grew up in the worst neighborhood in upstate NY though so maybe it wasnt common everywhere else.
>>
>>84236660
I especially love laughing at recent Degrassi. Like there's one episode that's a very special episode about periods, drug abuse, cyber-bullying, and misogyny all at once.

Over doing it is the Canadian way.
>>
>>84236842
I imagine living in Canada is like being trapped in a "very special episode" every day.
>>
>>84228982
My all time favorite Home Improvement VSE is when Brad made a movie starring himself murdering his parents and chopping them up into pieces. The parents didn't actually know what the movie was about and when they find out, it leads to a heart-to-heart about his issues with them. Pretty sure this was a Halloween special.

Static Shock was too real at times.
>>
>>84227602
The director told the audience to laugh then sync into dead silence for a split second to get the full dramatic effect. You can tell the laughs were forced. They did this a lot on sitcoms. It was a way of telling you that this sitcom, "hey" just got fucking serious.

I remember this episode as a kid. I had a major crush on Justine and that was tough to watch.

>When teenager Ted Blakely's mother Marian finds blood on his sheets, she takes him to Dr. Welby. An examination of the boy's injuries confirms that he was sexually assaulted, but Ted is too ashamed to admit it. As Dr. Welby advises Marian, Ted sneaks away and returns to school. Ted's rapist, his science teacher Bill Swanson, convinces him not to report the assault, but Ted vows to kill him should Bill ever touch him again. Ted's father George and stepmother Leah are unable to deal with Ted's assault. His father questions whether Ted could have stopped it, making Ted feel even more ashamed.

>In addition to suffering psychological trauma, Ted needs surgery to repair the internal injuries caused by the rape. With Ted in surgery, Swanson is arrested while trying to molest a child. Ted awakens and is able to admit that the assault happened and that he is ready to speak out. Dr. Welby tells him that Swanson is in custody and, per his own request, has been transferred to a mental hospital. Police sergeant Buchanan reassures George that the rape had nothing to do with homosexuality and that Ted has handled himself like "a real man"
