I know it's Disney, so they had to end on a "hopeful" note, but in terms of storytelling, that battle really should have been portrayed as more of a pyrrhic victory, which could have been done with an extra minute of action showing the Rebel fleet getting mopped up: ace X-Wing pilots getting swarmed and overwhelmed by TIE's in the background as smaller capitals get tractor-beamed into Star Destroyers and boarding pods latch onto larger Rebel capital ships.

I've never fully liked this scene. It's cool in certain ways on first glance,but there are also problems with it that would be problematic even if the prequels as a whole were better, the characters more well-written, and so on. For one thing, the way that the scene unfolds is obviously designed in order to show off various visuals rather than for a compelling higher reason. This draws attention to itself. Secondly, there is oddly little happening in the background. All the shooting seems to be happening in the vicinity of where-ever Anakin and Obi-Wan's ships are, and meanwhile the ships further away simply hover there. Also, the whole thing looks too shiny and video gamey. Perhaps more importantly, there is way too much camera movement. The camera calls attention to itself by constantly frantically maneuvering. CGI encourages this because the camera can be caused to do arbitrary things. But it feels weird and keeps the scene from feeling stately. Watch the attack on the Death Star from A New Hope. The camera doesn't swing wildly through the scene to follow the action. Instead, cuts from shot to shot are used to create motion of the point of view - a far superior technique which creates better psychological effects. When things on screen are moving, also moving the camera a lot as if it were a physical part of the scene, flying through it, is often extraneous and wastes the power of the cut from shot to shot.

This, The space battles are pathetic. They don't even attempt any sort of military decorum or command structure or anything either like the originals had. It plays like kids playing pretend with toy x-wings, just yelling whatever at each other and nothing at stake. The original trench run was fucking harrowing, everyone was dying and they knew it, but they had no other choice. They even set up Biggs in Luke's first scene in the movie so we'd have some personal connection to at least one of the other pilots (which worked brilliantly).

How do they keep getting it so wrong even when they try to make the same movie again? Is it because kid's movies can't have anything dark in them whatsoever now? But the scene where Han gets killed was pretty dark. I don't understand
