I thought he was funny in this. Although you might be right, I remember reading somewhere that Cage and the Coens disagreed on how some parts should be acted. Cage always wants to do his own thing.

Mainly this. Cage is good for insane faces, laughing like a madman and generally playing it over the top. Which doesn't really sit well with a more reserved and absurdist comedy like Coens do.
