Why did they make him such a Mary Sue in Trainspotting 2?

Yeah, it's a bit odd that they didn't show the police at all looking for him, but then again I think it would have been unnecessary considering that whole thing just barely had anything to do with the plot, and would probably have taken away from the film. It's reasonable to assume that the police just didn't know about her.
The main thing they were trying to do with his character was set up his relationship with his estranged son, and contrast it with the parallel of his relationship with his own father, which I thought had a nice payoff at that later moment.
But how exactly does that make him a mary sue, or rather a gary stu? The character is incredibly flawed, and it's quite obvious.
