The official unofficial word on the street is that the two directors wanted Han Solo to be simply cracking jokes all the time while longtime screen writer Lawrence Kasdan instisted that Han has always been more sarcastic and selfish than a straght up jokester.

Yeah, because they're actually funny and good at directing films. Meatballs, LEGO Movie and the Jump Streets are all really well-made films based off of horrible choices of source material that should have made them instant disasters. Taking bad concepts and spinning them into gold is their forte, which is why they were perfect for a Han Solo origin story movie.

Now we're just going to get another cookie cutter Disney-certified safe retread of classic Star Wars iconography again. It's impossible to debate now that all Disney wants to do with this series is just remake ANH over and over again.
