Star Trek was written by Kurtzman and Orci and he wasn't even the main writer behind Prometheus. Either way, handling a tv show is much different than just writing a movie, and with Lost and The Leftovers he's proved that he's perfectly capable.

Weeel, since "Watchmen" was like the graphic novel straight to the screen, kinda deal. Sooo, turning it into TV series is natural choice, though.

If it got the tone, structure and visuals right, a TV series of Watchmen would actually be excellent and almost on par with the book. It makes far more sense as a set of rigidly defined episodes which can follow multiple threads simultaneously while counting down to the climax.

I fear a non direct adaptation, I fear them messing with the message.
