Is it safe to say that animated comedies like Futurama and Family Guy and anime like Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion would not have had such large scale enduring popularity in America if not for the exposure they gained thanks to Adult Swim?

Definitely Futurama and Family Guy were brought back on the strength of their ratings on AS, and Cowboy Bebop became well-known in the US for being AS' first anime. Evangelion, that was already an essential show well before Adult Swim got it.

I won't deny that Adult Swim played a part in bringing back Family Guy however many times it got cancelled, but it's hard to believe now. You could put it on CMT and it'd do just fine. You could have an all-Family Guy channel and make bank.

Yeah, but only because AS helped revive it. Otherwise it would have ended up as just a cult show cancelled before its time.
Now it's ubiquitous.
