Does Malcolm's house only have two bedrooms in real life as well? Who would build a detached house with a large garden and large garage but only two bedrooms? Who would buy it? Why would you buy it if you have several children?

The flashbacks showed that they only had Francis at the time they bought that house. Everyone after him was a mistake.
the house has apparently been completely renovated
anyways, the MitM house was built in 1936, it was likely a starter home meant to be affordable for new families who would eventually move out to a larger home. The garage was likely built afterwards.

Should have converted the garage desu
why were they so poor? seems like other period shows depicted families with similar levels of income being solidly middle class. was francis' school just super expensive?

Wasn't Francis implied to be a mistake?
yes no maybe I don't know can you repeat the question you're not the boss of me now you're not the boss of me now you're not the boss of me now and you're not so big life is unfair

Children cost money and they have four of them instead of two.
Also they're "poor" supposedly down to their last penny but can afford to eat out with the whole family every two weeks. That's like $200 a month gone. The dad takes one of his kids to an amusement park or something similar every Friday. They're just bad with money.

not to mention, the children are heavily destructive inbetween episodes and off screen

Lois had a minimum wage job

That's funny, in the 90's they would be considered "working poor". Now they're middle-class. I wonder if the Cosbys bought another house?

Just seems weird to build a house specifically for people with a single kid. Even then most people would prefer to also have another room as an office, guest bedroom etc. But this was someone to whom it was more important that the house be fully detached, a bungalow, but with a large surface area around it, then a normal amount of rooms.
I know land is cheap in those American suburbs but still.

I dont think the modern (and kind of ridiculous) concept of a "starter home" existed in 1936.
