Why isn't type casting a thing (or at least a bad thing)

Why isn't type casting a thing (or at least a bad thing) anymore? For example William Shatner, Adam West, and Henry Winkler couldn't find work because they were stuck in the public's minds as Captain Kirk, Batman, and The Fonz.

What changed? Did audiences get smarter? Or did actors embrace these kinds of roles more?

Michael Caine turned down Bond to avoid typecasting. I guess actors got better at choosing diverse rolls
>>
Shatner's a bad example though.

Post-TOS he had TJ Hooker and Boston Legal - not good shows, but they were hits.

It's like he goes dormant for twenty years and emerges with a hit show.

Actors try harder to avoid it nowadays because they know it's bad for their career

There's no iconic roles anymore.
The over-saturation of media mean that not everyone is watching the same shit so no single character will ever be as popular as Captain Kirk or Superman again.
If Guardians of the Galaxy came out in the 70s you'd see kids dressed like Quill, GOTG conventions, toys, a whole subculture, because back then they just didn't have much. No internet, fewer movies, less things to entertain themselves with and grab onto. If anything was even remotely memorable back then it instantly became a pop culture staple.
Today though it's like pissing in an ocean of entertainment and nothing stands out, everything is instantly washed out of our long-term memory due to the constant tsunami of other media we consume daily.

Was The Matrix the last pop culture phenomenon with any staying power?
>>
>>84108368
MAYBE Lord of the Rings. But that was already well into the age of the internet.

LOTR kind of had a built in fanbase though. Matrix came out of nowhere and just completely changed pop culture for a few years.
>>
Instead of actors playing the same *type* of roles, you now just have actors playing the SAME roles over and over again. I consider that typecasting. The comic movie behemoth means that actors are locked up in the same characters going on for nearly a decade now.

Shatner worked constantly into his 80s. People who bitch about typecasting or "there are no good roles for women over__" just aren't getting the roles they WANT (leads). Whereas people like Shatner, Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, etc. just keep working. Small roles, big roles, TV, movies, bad guy, good guy, cameos, guest spots etc.
>>

Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow is still iconic as hell even though 4 of the 5 movies are shit.
>>
Actors got smarter. They tend not to stay in the same roll for more than a couple of years or try other things on the side whilst they are doing it (Peter Dinklage comes to mind. David Tennant from Doctor Who etc). I also think those people that hire them are more forgiving now and give them a variety of roles/take chances more.

Type casting still happens to this day, idiot. The difference is that there's no studio system anymore to literally force you to only do certain roles time and time again. Smart people consciously and actively seek lower budget indy roles to do dramatic stuff that shows off their versatility between the money gigs in attempt to show they can do different type of roles.

And as you get older, typecasting is a blessing since it guarantees work, especially if you're a cheaper character actor from the B/C-list. Look at Anthony Hopkins, he's entirely type cast as the wise older mentor/authority figure roles with secondary supporting cast status. Liam Neeson mostly does Taken style action movies because the first one was a hit.

Son....
Hopkins is a well respected actor from the A list, has SEVERAL awards, including an oscar, is a crowned knight, an actual orchestral composer and conductor and is considered to be one of the BEST actors of his generation.

It is though.
Need a big guy with a goofy voice?
Hire Tom Hardy.
>>
>>84108183
It still exists. Look at Michael Cera or Jonah Hill or Samuel L Jackson. Comedians often get pretty typecasted too and have a hard time breaking out into more serious stuff
