Why do people say Star Trek 2009 "isn't" very

Because it doesn't have bad costumes and makeup, and boring planet-side story lines.

It's not serious. It has no gravitas. It's juvenile. The original Star Trek was campy, but at its core it was an adult-themed show about adults. Kirk was a mature professional, the later caricatures of him notwithstanding. TNG had Picard, who could hold down a fucking helium balloon, and some serious themes. DS9 had Cardassia/Bajor and the Dominion war. Voyager had... never mind.
ST (2009) is like 90210 in space. It's basically a show about teenagers. It feels weird that Starfleet would allow these characters to crew a ship.
The characters are not even believable. Sure, it's an alternate continuity. But I don't believe that any version of Spock would strand Kirk on some random rock rather than, say, putting him in the brig. It makes no sense. It's like something a child would come up with. A dull-witted child.
ST (2009) also fucks with the established astronomical distances of Star Trek. These distances were never firmly established, and varied according to the needs of plot, but ST (2009) just makes the whole galaxy seem like it's a few miles across.

Because Star Trek, whether it was genuinely great television or embarrassing schlock (like a lot of big franchises, it did both)... was almost always trying about something either new or interesting.

Trek generally tried to be about scifi concepts, political or historical allegory, social conflict and prejudice in both the Federation and the real world, weird 60's elements, Gene Roddenberry's socialism and its response to capitalism in the 80's during the beginning of Next Gen, or just character stories that fleshed out various relationships.

Star Trek, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise all focused on different parts of this. 60's trek felt like an even balance to me, DS9 put much more emphasis on character conflict, and Enterprise seemed to start out trying to distance itself from the 60's camp, but later embraced its roots and got good.
Star Trek 2009 largely ignores or forgets about this. The only creative vision of Star Trek 2009 seems to be "how much Star Wars can we shove into this... because people (and myself) like Star Wars a lot".

Star Trek 2009 had bad guys with a planet destroying weapon just like Star Wars.
-said weapon destroyed 1 planet, but couldn't destroy the 2nd more important one just like Star Wars.
-bad guy killed the hero's father just like Star Wars (from a certain point of view).

Star Trek 2009 has the young male hero get saved by a mentor figure in a bar just like Star Wars.
-said mentor then dies in from of him (albeit in the second movie unlike Obi Wan).

Star Trek 2009 has the trinity of the hero, male friend with a contrasting personality, and the girl, just like Star Wars.
-said girl takes the friend over the hero as a romantic interest just like Star Wars.

Star Trek 2009 ends with an award ceremony just like Star Wars.
