Yes, filmmakers/writers are allowed more creative freedom on Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu than they would working with a major network (not everybody is going to get on HBO) or studio.
Because of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu we're going to see more medium budget movies and new auteurs arising. Hollywood is refusing to take chances.
