Is the reason films are bad nowadays because film makers have no real connection with the public? Is this due to literally having more people on the planet, therefore our subjective experiences continually stray away from each other?
This is, so is said, AJ nowadays
No it's because filmmakers aren't allowed to express themselves and instead everything is being forced into a standard blockbuster formula that nobody must venture outside of.

Have you considered that most people on this board rarely look beyond whatever big budget tentpole summer movies are currently in theaters? There's plenty of good independent films being made.

He's literally living the life. Was in the greatest show of all time now playing poker for a living.
Market is bigger now so even shitty movies make decent money and making money is good enough for the producers.
It's because studios have so much competition with streaming services and expanding television revenues that they can't take chances any more. It used to be that only the extremely large budgeted movies that cost 80+ million dollars were meticulously watched over by studio execs to ensure they got a return on their investment. They used to let filmmakers do what they wanted with 10-20 million dollar movies, but the budget simply doesn't exist for these types of movies, and even when they do make a lower-budget movie the studio still demands a return on their investment. If filmmakers aren't allowed to do what they want then you end up with lowest-common denominator garbage, hence why the only movies that get made any more are ones that aren't taking chances. Marvel and DC and Star Wars movies are going to make their money regardless of whether they are quality movies or not.
