Did this come across as a big step back to anyone else for Refn? Maybe I'm just a pleb, but I didn't care aout what was happening, didn't feel much tension throughout, the characters were whatever and the performances were off but not in the good way like you want. Was the makeup artist the cougar in the motel room? A werecougar?
I found it pretentious and there was no real point to much of anything. It just gets dumb and try-hard at the end with the girl eating the eyeball. Come on.
The cinematography was nice and the movie was good to look at, but who cares? I didn't
it had some pacing issues where it didn't feel like it was building up "creepiness" levels through the movie.
It seems thats what Refn was going for and it didn't really work.
still id probably give it a 7/10

This.
It turns into a horror/slasher flick like 30 minutes before the end and all that came before was much more drama related.
Also, the horror aspect, although beautifully shot, was dumb.
I dont know.
I noticed it was a way longer movie for Refn's standards. So yeah, it had serious pacing problems

The fact that you are talking about it and asking questions is evidence enough that is has made an impression (regardless if you've completely missed its point).
This is one of the primary reasons why good art is effective. It gets people talking.
It was perfect for what it was: a giallo homage.
Off performances, plot points that make no sense, etc. are all classic giallo staples.
I suggest watching Woman in a Lizard's Skin and Blood and Black Lace to see what specific movies he was trying to emulate.

Honestly I was getting prepared for utter shit and my heart was feeling tight and as the movie went I relaxed and enjoyed the ride.
There is so much bad movies going around I was ready to throw the towel on refin but it turned out ok.
Not as good as drive but I got the message and it neatly made.

when Elle cuts her self in the bathroom and the girl licks it up. I was thinking "Okay here we go..its gonna start to increase its creep levels" but it really didn't.
Should have started normal enough but then fanning starts to notice an increasing levels of horror through the film in a nice slow burn until the ending where it goes full slasher/giallo
also the trailer made it seem like Elle was the killer...kinda disappointed
