It is only human to choose pleasure and security over freedom. Its reasonable to want this, to make that choice.

So I think we can all agree that Cypher, while sane, was stuck in the mindset that the matrix was anything but an illusion. It is a perfect illusion, so it makes rational sense to want to be deceived rather than to see the horrible truth, though. Given the environment he is in though, this is a deviant way to think.
