just finished watching The Eaters of Light and och aye what an episode

what did /who/ think?

to me it felt very Classic Who - then again that might be because Rona Munro wrote it but hey

desu I thought from the promo pics that the face-paint was like a sign of unearthly possession or something, but no it's just face-paint

I'm seriously upset that this is Michelle Gomez's last series as Missy though

would you give Simmaster a kiss

>>84019376

>>
>>84018654
It's... an episode. The mystery wasn't really interesting, the characters were mostly annoying, the monster wasn't threatening outside of it's first scene, and the big emotional climax was just dry. The last five minutes of the episode were better than the rest of it.

Also, taking time out of the plot to once again remind us how gay Bill is, but that's okay, because she's among Romans, and they're all okay with that!
>>
I get she's a lesbian. You didn't need to remind us that she was. Also, there are black centurians and everyone is gay or bi now way back when. That's cool.. i mean it's not like there was a shortage but you could at least leave that shit out. Oh look, "Nardie" is telling us about the vault for the hundredth fucking time. no that's okay. It wasn't annoying at all.

What a mess of an episode.
I liked the season so far but this was ass. 3/10. Would've been 0 if not for The Doctor himself.

What if the Master isn't actually there? What if he's a hallucination, experienced by Missy as she struggles to bury her dark side? What if Simm – the old, unreformed Master, complete with sinister beard – represents all of Missy's wickedness, her amorality?

Could he be the devil on her shoulder, with the Doctor as the angel?

Yeah, it seems like it's gonna be full on. Cybermen, Master, Missy, Mondas and whatever happens to Bill and Nardole. Thank god it TDF gets 1 hour. I wonder if the modern Cybermen really are just a flashback whilst it's being explained to Bill or something.

The Eaters of Light is an exceptional example of what’s expected from Doctor Who while also having its own unique feel. Right from the beginning it sets itself apart. Note how in retrospect the obvious (read: cliché) choice for a cold open is to show some Romans stumbling around in the dark for a minute before being attacked by an offscreen creature, but instead we get something much more intriguing and memorable, seeing the aftermath of the episode’s events in a way that only hints at what the episode will be about. Similarly, the crows and the lingering music are beautiful touches that were predictably maligned by people who can’t accept or aren't even aware of the idea of lack of realism as a deliberate, valid artistic choice; in a word, plebs. It’s fitting that a story about the meeting of two ancient civilizations, one of which we know almost nothing about, reads in part like a myth and it actually approaches the “fairy tale” aspect of Moffat’s Doctor Who in a way that nothing else in his eight year long era has. Despite this, it also engages with real history in a way that almost none of the new series has, portraying a real historical conflict in a nuanced way that’s highly critical of the Romans without demonizing them as heartless monsters. Compare to the hamfisted message and cartoonish villain of Thin Ice or the complete disinterest in history as anything other than a background for aliens to invade over or a place to meet a particular famous person seen in most new series historicals. We haven’t really had something like this since Human Nature/The Family of Blood.

cont.
>>
i swear to fucking god if the doctor regenerates because he was mad that bill died i will go fucking ballistic
>>
>>84027292
And yet, The Eaters of Light is mostly conventional. The conventions are just done really well. The monster is very good looking by Doctor Who standards and the deaths suffered by its victims are nice and gruesome while being safely PG, pretty much what the “turn people into cubes” gun in Empress of Mars failed to be. All of the main cast is on form. The best moment is either “Did you hear that sound? That was my patience shattering” or Nardole telling stories to the Picts when the Doctor emerges from the cave. But Bill in particular has really come into her own now. She’s gone from being entirely reactive and constantly in awe of the Doctor in her early episodes to someone who’s able to take charge of a situation and willing to stand up to the Doctor. In the Monk arc she was developing more independence and now she’s even picking up some of the Doctor’s positive traits. Recall in Thin Ice when the Doctor makes a speech about the value of human life that has Bill wishing she could make a speech like that and compare to this episode, where Bill inspires the Romans with a very 12-esque speech of her own. Of course, this character development has gone right over the heads of those who don’t pay attention and will claim that Bill is a completely static character or has no personality beyond being gay; in a word, plebs.

cont.
>>
>>84027316
The portrayal of Roman attitudes to sexuality may go beyond the bounds of historical accuracy, but it’s not completely baseless and is at least an interesting subversion of the expectation that Bill will always be the target of discrimination and prejudice, certainly a better one than the lame blue person jokes in Oxygen. Naturally, people hated the scene for bringing up Bill’s sexuality in any way at all, since apparently any mention of homosexuality is painful to them. In a similar vein, the fact that a woman is entrusted with the task of fighting off an other-dimensional monster isn’t the most credible thing, but it doesn’t really matter when Kar is written as a character with flaws rather than the stereotypical strong independent woman who can do everything on her own. The Romans, sparse as their characterization is, are also given enough to be identifiable and sympathetic, which is impressive given the power of Kar’s big speech condemning them. In particular it’s worth comparing them to the cast of Knock Knock, another bunch of youngsters in over their heads and hunted by monsters but with much less chemistry and agency. In fact, it’s hard to find an episode in series 10 that The Eaters of Light doesn’t compare favorably to. Extremis maybe, just because it was such a different kind of episode. It’s pacey, clever, thoughtful, unique, I’m not sure what more you could ask from the show.

Also I didn’t have trouble seeing anything, haven’t got a clue what anons are talking about with the episode being too dark.

Tonally, Eaters of the Light felt very different from the rest of the season and even the rest of the show. It reminded me of Woman Who Lived in that way. The Romans took as they please and dominated a lot of the world. In a way, they were a more civilized version of the Mongols. Even still, the Romans did some REAL fucked up shit, such as forcing captured women to have sex with animals in their colosseums.

Also Romans also had a couple of black people in their society. It's an inevitable thing since Roman expanded so much that of course it'd gain people from Africa. Hell, to be honest, during the final days of Rome, it's army wasn't even an actual army made up of native Romans. It was basically just a huge army of barbaric Goth mercenaries that revolted when they were getting insufficient payment.

Several hundred of you have donated to Gallifrey Base over the years, and for that we are all exceedingly grateful - I, the staff, and all 84,000+ of the other members have you to thank for making sure the forum can maintain its high technical standard of operation and availability. Since we first secured our non-profit status and began taking donations in 2009 a few months after opening, we have been lucky every year to be financially self-supporting. As you probably already know, our dedicated server costs alone are approximately $4,000/year, and that bill comes due around the end of September. Every year, we've paid the bill in full and on time, thanks to you.

Every year it gets harder and harder to raise enough money to pay the bills. Facebook and other instant-gratification general social apps continue to erode places like Gallifrey Base. Just like last year, we need to start our pleas for donations earlier than usual in the year, because we simply must raise the money. I hope you all understand (and enjoy) the benefits of a forum like this. We're still (legally) a registered non-profit corporation. There's no way to generate money as a non-profit, other than donations. I beg (and I'm clearly not above begging!) you all to make a donation in the highest amount you can, as early as you can (Patronships are extended by 1 year from the date you donate OR from your current expiration date if you are already a Patron, so giving now won't penalize your Patronship period).

Yeah, which is why Sherlock can pull in 8 million overnight, and Broadchurch 7-8 million

Because that plot line was resolved 7 years ago and only the Simm Master heard it.

How have you not heard of a landing strip before? It's the latter.

>2.8 million overnight viewers
>2.8 million
>2.8 MILLION
>TWO POINT EIGHT MILLION

5am breakfast shows get more than this. Doctor Who is on its last legs.

Remember when one of Tennant's episodes got 14 million overnight

Reminder all Romans were bisexual and historians are homophobe if they think otherwise:

I quite liked the scene where Bill said she was gay. It came across to me as a funny juxtaposition. Bill's sort of nervous about saying it because she thinks the Romans might not be okay with same-gender sex, that they might not be as progressive as the world of 2017.
But the Romans were notorious for fucking each other, man or woman, orgies everywhere, they didn't care and never saw it as weird.
I think the point was that Bill was kinda nervous about the Romans's reactions, but then it backfired and they were all like "wow, you're weird, you ONLY sleep with women? You're like that dude over there who only sleeps with men". I thought it was funny.
They took the running joke of Bill saying she's gay and did something fun with it.

Like the time she met that blue-skinned guy in Oxygen and he calls her a racist. The writers are poking fun at the whole SJW thing, but it seems to all fly over the average /who/vians' head on here.

As a gay guy, bill having to make a dramatic ''BUT I'M GAY'' speech makes it seem like gays aren't normal and are a special case. It's treating her like shes not normal. Once was enough. We didn't see Rose say she was straight to three lesbians did we?

How did I just know Simm and Missy would dance. They should dance to snow Patrol in the end

Yep, HUGELY forgettable. Even while watching it I was getting a 'this still on?' feeling.

She will? From who? Why is this taken for granted? We haven't seen it, except for in Victorian London, where she certainly won't "always be".
