You know what would have been nice? Iirc there was a scene where Zach and his mom talk about his sister (iirc she died as well). Wouldn't it have been nice if they had a picture of her next to his mother's bed, and it was a picture of Thuy Trang? That would have been a respectful nod, I think.

For diversity purposes. That's it. Trini being gay means absolutely nothing in the movie. They made her gay to hype gay people (especially women) to see it, or at least the dumber ones who think that's a legitimate reason to see a movie.
