How exactly does that make it bad scifi? Also there's a shitload of focus on the scifi elements that complements and plays off the psychological elements. They are interconnected fairly seamlessly. If Evangelion was 100% scifi it would just be another unremarkable mecha anime with a cookie cutter protagonist. Just watch Pacific Rim if you want giant robots fighting.

You can't really argue that. The only thing Evangelion does better is directing and sound design, which are important but not as much as acting and writing. The Sopranos also has the advantage of being atleast five times longer.
