I read a book once. It was in the Crimean war, and the main character was tasked with protecting a young man from an aristocratic family.
The young lad was full of pep and vinegar and loved the idea of going to war, but the main character had been in a few wars and was completely terrified.
The young lad, against the urgings of the main character, ran into the battle. And got gunned down.
The main character ran up to him, and the way the scene was set up, you were thinking there would be a 'head-holding-meaningful-last-words' scene.
Instead, the boy's eyes couldn't focus on anything and he coughed up blood all over the main character.
