>>
>>83897116
When a girl tells you in no uncertain terms that she'll never be in a relationship with you, you should take the hint and move on. Or at least pretend to. Really anything is better than saying "NO YOU JUST DON'T REALIZE I CAN PROVE THAT WE'RE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER." It's like being a door to door salesman who keeps ringing the doorbell even after the door's been slammed in your face.

Wasn't he in some relatively recent audio drama?
>Apparently he should be appearing eventually, as the Doctor is in his 12th(not counting war doctor) incarnation, so that means eventually he should appear, as he appears in between the 12th and 13th incarnations....
No, he is between Doctor's 12th and final incarnations, nothing says final is supposed to be 13th.
The Valeyard was named dropped in The Name of the Doctor, but that was more fanservice than anything.
>>
>>83897402
Some of them just have really, really fat girlfriends who smell like rotten ham. I've seen it.
>>
>>83897380

it was publicly posted on twitter so that people know adam is predatory and to hopefully get him to stop harassing the girl. spreading it is the whole point

I don't expect you to understand, considering you had to have somebody explain to you that relationships require mutual consent

Are we supposed to think River is dead? Isn't she just in a digital world and can be easily brought back like literally everyone who died in the library was?
>>
>>83898359
If that was the case, why would the Doctor have left her there?

We have already seen post-Library River in NotD though, so it's pretty meaningless. Still, Husbands was a good ending.
>>
>>83898359
Because all the people in the library were saved when the Library detected the shadow shit or whatever. The people that died by the shadow things are dead, a bit of their consciousness was saved by the comms equipment which was then transferred to digital.
>>
>>83898495
But they were all brought back, including Donna. There was only one chick who got damaged in the transfer. Based on what we've seen, nothing stands in the way of bringing her back.
>>83898409
>If that was the case, why would the Doctor have left her there?
I don't know, you try spending 24 years with the one person.
>>
>>83898562

>>
>>83898769
>capitalism ended forever in the 50th century
>>
>>83898769
The key premise of the episode (Oxygen is a scarce commodity) was not elaborated upon enough which made it unclear what capitalist practice do suits getting software update that kills people is supposed to criticise (Was it a metaphor for Windows 10?)

Is oxygen scarce by nature? If so, why did company vented it and how will not-capitalism fix the scarcity?
Is company holding oxygen monopoly and thus selling it overprices? Then why are they so upset over wasting commodity that doesn't actually have this high Activity-based costing.
Is another company selling them overpriced oxygen by holding artificial monopoly? That would make it a good libertarian episode, was this what they were going for?

Either way, if miners no longer earn the oxygen, why not just stop supplying it to them?
>>
>>83896563
>>83896328

I was really thinking about how weird it was that he got a backstory. They usually don't give backstories to those who are gonna die extremely soon, so I seriously thought this dude was gonna somehow save the day or something.

Instead, he gets BOXED like the rest of his mates. So I'm just like, what was the point? He doesn't even live long enough to warrant a backstory.
>>
>>83899113
You sympathise more with characters who die if you know what their future ambitions were
If it's just some random red shirt then nobody cares, but if they had ambitions you can think "oh fuck they didn't get to do that thing they wanted to that's sad"

It's why the '2 days to retirement' meme is a thing
>>
>>83899113
Never thought I'd see someone complain about side characters having some depth. But then again, what can you expect from a cletus
>>
>>83899195
don't abuse the 'cletus' term
that anon didn't even mention the fact the character was black. There's literally nothing racial let alone racist in that post
>>
>>83899253
calm down, cletus
>>
>>83899171
Exactly. The second he started talking about his life back home I knew he was going to get killed.
What was funny to me was how quickly it all happened. They didn't even try to make it seem like a natural part of the story like you usually would, his backstory was introduced in the same scene that he died in
>>
>>83899373
that's gatiss for you
>>
>>83899384
I actually quite like Gatiss, but that definitely felt like something that was hastily written in at the last second

Yeah it does, which is why I was confused. He wants to know who sent him the letter telling him to come to Nevada but they don't tell him. He gets angry and river tells him just to trust her. He replies by asking why he would trust someone he doesn't know and asks who she is. Amy then asks him to trust her instead.

In the next episode river kisses him and the doctor is surprised as they've never kissed before, repeating again that she's a stranger to him. river is sad because this means it's the last time she meets him even though a. It's not and b. She learnt all this the previous episode

He does recognize her though, he doesn't immediately say "who the fuck are you and why did you shoot my hat" when she first appears in that episode
He sort of knows River but she is still a mystery to him which is why he doesn't trust her

>Trust you? Sure. But, first of all, Doctor Song, just one thing. Who are you? You're someone from my future. Getting that. But who? Okay. Why are you in prison? Who did you kill, hmm? Now, I love a bad girl, me, but trust you? Seriously.

s6e1:
Rory: Where are we going?
The Doctor: Home. Well you two are. Off you pop and make babies. And you, Doctor Song, back to prison. And me, I’m late for a bi-plane lesson in 1911. Or it could be knitting. Knitting or bi-planes, one or the other. {he sits down, clearly bothered} What? A mysterious summons? You think I’m just going to go? Who sent those messages? I know you know. I can see it in your faces. Don’t play games with me. Don’t ever, ever think you’re capable of that.
River: You’re going to have to trust us this time.
The Doctor: Trust you. Sure. But first of all, Doctor Song, just one thing. Who are you? You’re someone from my future—getting that—but who? {silence}. Okay. Why are you in prison? Who did you kill? Hm? {silence} Now I love a bad girl, me. But trust you? Seriously?

>There are some interesting and imaginative ideas at the episode’s core: the mythical nature of the setting, talking crows (yes, really), and a time travel plot device closer to Moffat territory. Mathieson as a whole is kind of overrated, he's just alright, not absolute-kino-maker.

1) there were times once (when some homosexual man was in charge or when steven moffat tried with character developing) when this happened

Hartnell's era was full of consequences. Same with stuff like War Games, Earthshock, etc. When characters used to die, pre-Moffat, they generally stayed dead, etc.
>>
>>83913277
It's not a three-parter.

>>83913308
>Hartnell's era was full of consequences
Not it's not, other than companion introductions/departures or something tacked onto the end of an episode to set up the next that has nothing to do with most of the preceding story.
>>
>>83913298
The Pilot.
Empress of Mars if im being very-very-very generous to the plot simplicity.

Everything else is worse.

Look' I'm not saying that Oxygen is shit. It's alright. But for some reason people think it's best episode ever, when this kind of episode 6 years ago would be considered as an okay mid-series story with some cool aspects. Like 42 in series 3.
>>
>>83913159
>Mathieson as a whole is kind of overrated, he's just alright, not absolute-kino-maker.
He used to make very well-composed episodes that align very well with what I think works best for Doctor Who. Until Oxygen, he fucked this one up.
>>
>>83913369
>It's not a three-parter.
I don't give a fuck, either way simulations contributed nothing to the character developement, to the series motives, to capaldi's doctor etc.

>>
>>83913394
Both of his series 8 episodes were much better than Oxygen, I agree with that. Still, I don't think that they are god-tier or all-time classics, both Mummy and Flatline were quintessential nuwho adventurous episodes, which Capaldi's era really really lacked of.
>>

>>83913532
I don't know, I don't like it. I'm already used to consequences-type of storytelling early Moff and RTD had.
By the way, it's you who pointed out only this exact part of the list of things I didn't like about Extremis.
>>
>>83913574
I always thought Doctor Who works best as mystery show. It's in many way resembles to me a police procedural. Doctor is an outsider who, along with his partner comes to a place where shit is happening to find out what and interacts with people affected, who will never be seen again.

So what made me enjoy Mummy so much was that it was structured like a mystery and Doctor won by figuring it out and what he figured out was complete bollocks of course, but it felt like it makes sense. Flatline was utilizing another thing I like - tricking enemy into their own undoing. The Girl Who Died to an extent had the same appeal to me.

Oxygen had the same potential as Mummy, but premise never came together.
>>
>>83913369
>Not it's not, other than companion introductions/departures or something tacked onto the end of an episode to set up the next that has nothing to do with most of the preceding story.
Can you not comprehend consequences within stories? Also there are things that affect future stories, in lots of Who. Saying "lol dr who has never had consequences" is just complete BS.
>>
Extremis was good on its own, and it definitely needed a follow-up to be justified, but it has no effect on the following episodes which is disappointing.

>consequences within stories
So every episode of Doctor Who, including Extremis? Am I being baited?
>>
>>83913414
>>83913532
The problem is that it was essentially part one of a Monk saga, so it needed to link in better. When you think of other 3 parters, like Utopia/SOD/LOTL, Utopia is mostly its own thing but ends with 10 minutes of properly setting something up for the next 2 episodes. Extremis set up literally nothing - the ending was just "The Doctor knows some Monks are coming." and thats it
>>
>>83913665
I agree with this sentiment. I greatly enjoyed Under the Lake for the same reason, as it fits that reliable who formula - go to interesting new location, investigate what's going wrong/killing people, get to know supporting cast who inhabit this particular episode's location.

Of course, the solution to the problem needs to be satisfying, or the episode falls flat. Look at Knock Knock for example; follows the same formula and had a good buildup, but not only are space lice as an enemy boring as fuck but the solution is "ask the wood lady to stop absorbing people" and that's that. No real effort or consequence.
>>
>>83913576
>\who/
Is this another parallel universe?
>>
>>83913665
I agree. By the way, Mathieson's previous episodes had interesting characters who made impact on the story. Perkins, Rigsy, even Ashildr.
Oxygen never delivers on side characters, the only thing I can remember about Oxygen is Dah'Renn, who is blue. And he's also tired of racists. And his only line is about racists. So he exists literally just to throw this funny gag. Which, to be quite honest, is indeed funny, but Dah'Renn is still flat as a character.

A lot of people assumed it would tie in heavily with part 3. That the twist would be the dystopia is all another simulation, and The Doctor wasn't just enabling the subjugation and murder of innocents for six months as a prank. I honestly think that would have been better than what we got, even if it would have been foreseeable
>>
>>83913800
You've pretty much nailed it. As a standalone episode, it nearly comes together and works okay, but since it was there to essentially set up 2 more weeks of Monks, it needed to do more than it did. (Or the whole simulation idea needed to be revisited/brought in again, since Extremis served to set up that and that alone)

Under the Flood really failed. It had a brilliant structure where it starts in the future and we see consequences before we go into past and find out the cause. But it heavily devoted itself to a worthless fakeout while relevant things were few and far apart.

>>
>>83913920
yeah, that's why I only mentioned the first part. Before the Flood dropped the ball on what could have been a solid early-season adventure.
>>
>>83913887
Agreed. It would've been a groan moment - oh, still inside a simulation, or inside another one - but it would've been better than what we had. Or, they could've done a twist on it: the world really is under Monk control, except for the Vault which they didn't know about and which was 'cut off' from the simulation - and then you have an episode whereby Missy comes into action to help more AND that way theres also a twist on it still being a a simulation.

You can make a good dream/simulation episode if it has impact on real world. Hard to do on Doctor Who though.
>>
>>83914173
As much as I'd like it to be true it's almost certainly not Ellis.
>>
I think it might have been better if Extremis actually featured the Monk dystopia, but with the same solution of The Doctor figuring out it's a simulation and warning the real Doctor. Then the following two episodes are about figuring out how to stop events from occurring as they did in the simulation

Lie of the Land was really weak episode, but it could be more if Doctor had a good reason to pretend to be on Monks' side.

What if the entire actual plan from Monks was to corrupt Doctor through his new eyes? But they couldn't corrupt visual memory he got into his mind through his glasses? And he pretended to be corrupted until he actually could strike (Rather than randomly ram ships into harbours)

I mean the fake regeneration scene with Bill was ass, but the episode makes clear that the whole six months of collaborating with the monks was to gradually win over the support of the guards and use them to overthrow the monks. How the monks were unable to fend off a small group of guards when they can take out airplanes and subs from miles away and why they had no guards of their own at their base are still open questions, but the Doctor wasn't just doing it for the lolz.
