In the film, the turtles lose their father figure and have to learn how to work together to get him back.

Danny, the human kid, is torn between two fathers: one who is ultimately a good man but has difficulty showing his son affection, and one who is an evil man but makes a show about caring about his "sons." Shredder doesn't care about them of course, but this also highlights the hypocrisy of just telling your son you care about him vs actually caring about him.

The relationship triangle between Danny-Charles-Shreddrr shows that it's not enough to just provide for your children financially if you're not going to provide for them emotionally.
