What does /tv/ think of the 1960's Batman series? Since Adam West died, I figure it's a good time to discuss it.

It's the best live-action Batman adaptation.

Edgy retards trying to make Batman DRK all the time don't get the point that the comic could basically be a sequel/bad end to this very series, and that the point was not that Batman should be dark and gritty but to examine him being forced to become so by age and time.

To me, that's what makes it so good - imagining this overgrown boyscout do-gooder, taking the whole "always be prepared" motto to terrifying extremes.

Something else I don't think a lot of people get is that "The Dark Knight" Batman is essentially commentary on the rising tide of "grimdark" heroes and violence that were creeping back in as the CCA released its stranglehold on the industry.
>>
>>83868891
That's fucking awesome.
>>
>>83869357
Yes, although grimdark wouldn't see its worst excesses until after (and partially inspired by) DKR, ironically enough.

It's similar to how Lobo was reimagined as an absurdist parody of late 80's/90's edge and somehow became more popular than the characters he was satirising. Comics are like no other medium when it comes to fans and creators completely missing the fucking point.

I still think DKR is a brilliant comic, but I basically have to divorce it in my mind from pretty much everything that followed.

Batman & Robin more or less killed campy/fun Batman for a solid decade until The Brave and The Bold made it okay for people to admit to liking fun Batman again. Before then it was all just grimdark edgy shit.

I didnt like Batman Forever, Two Face and Nygma overacted way way too much.

Why is this so fascinating to look at?

Is it two different shots under different lighting cut in together? It's almost like looking at some sort of anachronism, an effect achieved practically in a way that gives the appearance of digital manipulation.

They could legitimately do that with what they're setting up. Give us an early career Batman that's basically Indiana Jones/Doc Savage/Pulp Era in tone, a mid-film showing his fall, and a post-film showing his redemption and him passing on the mantle to Grayson.

They could do that and I would be absolutely riveted.

I'm holding out hope that that's what they're going for with this cinematic Universe - something that's as malleable in tone as DC's comics have traditionally been.

This show wasn't big on continuity, anon. There were three different Mr Freezes, John Astin played Riddler once, and there was a third Catwoman (Lee Meriwether) in the movie. This was a time when fans didn't care about such things.

As it happens the recent Batman '66 comic series explained this by saying Selina Kyle (Newmar's character, although that name is never used in the show) retires to open a nightclub, and a new person (i.e. Kitt's character) takes over the role of Catwoman.

I feel like starting in the middle was a bad move, if that's the case. I don't give Snyder a huge amount of credit, but I do feel like he was trying to deconstruct and rebuild these characters for the modern age, perhaps with the notion of going in reverse to the comics - start out dark and cynical then introduce hope and optimism.

At any rate, while that's a brilliant idea in principle if you leave the audience in the dark to that intention, you end up with a rejection of your creative efforts before the message can be fully delivered. Also I feel like Snyder has a huge issue with his films in that they're full of brilliant and somewhat memorable moments that work in isolation, but have almost no connective tissue gluing them together. They almost work better as trailers or short tone pieces than full films.

I think Snyder is essentially starting from the base of a Nolanverse-type setting where Bruce sort of dually represents the pulp era as well as the grim, gritty era of 90s comics. He drops Superman into that environment and the environment is changing to accommodate a hero like him. From that perspective, the three central figures represent three different facets of comic book characters:

Bruce: pulp heroes
Clark: superheroes/modern myth
Diana: ancient myth

Don't forget, one of penguin's goons is launched into the arms of an exploding octopus, and the dehydrated pirate crew are reduced to antimatter in the movie.

It was always there in the comics. Thing was, Bruce had dealt with it. He wasn't still carrying the "MUH PARENTS ARE DEAD" baggage. He'dmoved on and was happy being a fully deputized superhero/crime fighter.

That's the genius of it. You weren't supposed to. The parents were the ones the comedy was aimed at. KIds simply ha a cool show about their favorite superhero.

For a while in high school I insisted I hated the West Batman. I grew up on it, but I found it silly and preferred the darker versions of the character.

Then I grew the fuck up and admired the show even more than I did as a kid. And certainly in new ways.

I understand why people would like it, but i find it incredibly hard to watch.

I cant stand to watch most things from the 60-70s. I feel incredibly uneasy when watching stuff. Its a combination of the color and editing. Its really weird.

That's actually why I enjoy them so much. Also the artifacts. It's also the reason I enjoyed Death Proof more than any other Tarantino film.

My mom showed me a post on a facebook group she's on and it was some guy talking about how he brought his (very old) veteran dad to a convention near where they lived because Adam West & Burt Ward were going to be there and his dad was a big fan of the 60's Batman.

So anyway, for some reason or another I don't remember (sickness or general old person fragility) the dad couldn't make to the actual convention center or whatever you call it to meet them in person so the son goes to get their autographs for his dad.

I'm ruining the story so I'm just going to get to the juice: Adam West goes to the hotel room to greet the dad "as Batman" (no not in costume lol) talk to him and at one point says "Hey we should get Robin!" to which they go over to Burt Ward's hotel room, they take a picture together, at some point the dad told Adam West about Batman being his favorite superhero and Adam West, God bless his soul, replies back with, "No, you're MY hero" because of the whole being a veteran thing and I know it must sound corny ass when I relay the story but, it took a lot of my willpower not to tear up a little in front of my mom when I was reading the story.

Maybe I'll get a copy of the actual story, photo and all and post it on one of these near future Batman/Adam West threads.

(and whether the story is true or not (or maybe just exaggerated a little bit, at least) there was certainly photographic proof that Adam West, Burt Ward, the poster and the poster's dad all took a photo together in the dad's hotel room on the guy's story post. And given that Adam West himself was a veteran and I could absolutely see him having a lot of respect for veterans that are older than him, I choose to believe it.)

hopefully you have a change of heart. watching some old stuff like M*A*S*H* Star TrekOS etc. is a real treat. the trick is to remember that the shows shouldn't entirely be held to modern standards in terms of video quality and editing. they are a product of their time which makes them even more special
>>
>>83896359

I think what makes 60's Batman so charming is how they portray everything. Yes it has bright colours. Yes the acting isn't the best. But you also have to remember that this was near the beginning of colour television as well as television itself as TV had only been around for about a decade. Of course they would want to use these colours because they have never had the chance to do it before. The problems and situations Batman and Robin always got stuck in were also treated with a sense of seriousness as if they would effect the world. You can argue instances such as shark repllent, surfing, and even batman carrying the bomb all out way these issues, but I believe they add a little comic book realism to the mix. I feel it's only considered campy because of today's standards of Batman and comic movies as a whole.
>>
>>83895521
'66 Batman is legitimately the last time outside of comics I remember the character doing any real detective work. Maybe that has something to do with it.

The 60s coloring and aesthetic is also why TOS is my favorite Star Trek series. I hate how modern capeshit shows and movies, especially DC, tone down and desaturate everything. It just looks terrible and depressing. Superheroes should be fun and colorful, not everything has to be so damn grimdark. Even looking back at Batman '89, it was dark but it was still vibrant af.
>>
>>83898447
'89 Batman had contrast. Batman was desaturated to the point of being monochrome barring three identifiable points of colour: his mouth, his eyes, and the yellow surround of the bat-symbol. Joker and his goons were a riot of primary colours.

Just from the division of colour palettes you knew exactly what the protagonist and antagonist were all about, it's this kind of thing that seems to get lost in a sea of digital sludge in today's filmmaking.

It's alright, it gives you a bit of the campy flavor of 60s tv. It can be fun. It's a completely different depiction of batman than what we've had since the 1980s.

But it's not high cinema in any way and if you've seen one, you've seen em all. The same gags every episode just a different villain and slightly different plot.
>>
>>83896359
Its not a matter of "heart". Like not watching old movies just because theyre b&w.
I start feeling physically uneasy when i watch most things from 60s-70s.
Almost like a panic attack kind of feeling.
Been this way since i was a kid. I didnt like being around when the family was watching star trek/green arcres/mary tyler moore/gomer pyle/get smart/munsters/batman/etc/etc reruns.

I can watch some things though. Like brady bunch, mash, bob newhart.

I get the same feeling with some new shows. If they do excessive, pointless shakey cam shit and quick, 2 second edits.
