Most directors are egotic and greedy. And most moviegoers are still willing to watch dumb capeshit movies. WHy change?

Let's be honest though.

If everyone on set does a good job (especially music, editing, writers, casting directors etc etc) then you can have a fucking horse be director and the movie will turn out okay if not great.
