I don't get it. The cinematography is beautiful but can someone tell me why this is one of the greatest films of all time? I think I kind of understand thatAlma and Elisabet are the same personbut not much outside of that. Any explanations or anything that might help me understand the deeper meanings behind this?

Basically Elisabet was stressed about being a mother so she convinced herself that she was a different person (Alma) as a coping mechanism. Alma also got pregnant my accident, but she was able to get an abortion, avoiding the situation that Elizabet was faced with. Its highly regarded because it was pretty influential for other surrealist directors like Lynch
