In the book, we're in this room with a little boy, Arthas, and Ner'Zhul. It becomes apparent that the little boy is Arthas' humanity. After a long argument back and forth about what the next move is and what the Lich King's goals are, Arthas kills the little boy. Ner'Zhul is proud of Arthas for choosing him over the boy, but then Arthas kills him as well. It's actually pretty cool.
