The thing is that the show was very vehement on giving the message that Lily and Marshall were the "go-to" perfect couple that other characters aspired towards being like.

Yeah, but they also show they weren't always perfect, just on the outside to everyone else.
Alone they would get into fights and not agree on things which Lily would use against Marshall.
Marshall always had to go against his better judgment to appease Lily.
