Communication is, in fact, the closest thing we have to magic. A word can freeze a room. A word can taint the atmosphere. A word can ruin someone's day. A single word contains all the ideas that everyone who hears it associates with that word, it sits in their memory and subtly changes them.
The only time this seems 'magic', rather than mundane, is when we refuse to try and understand it.

Things aren't actually that complicated - everyone learns as a kid that words can hurt people, so it's not a very big step up to imagine that words in certain /contexts/ can make life unpleasant as well.
So for example, if you tried listening and having a bit of empathy, you could take it in good faith that hearing the word nigger in the context of being tossed around by white people makes a lot of black people feel pretty grim, maybe because it evokes memories of how it's been used to alienate and abuse them in their own life, or just because it rather callously shoves in their face historical racial dynamics they didn't want to have to think about today. People usually have sincere reasons for feeling bad, it's not just a random Pavlovian response.
With that in mind, taking a bit of care and making a different dumb joke costs very little. Apologising and expressing understanding costs absolutely nothing.

I didn't express myself correctly by calling it a fake apology. I think Bill really did regret saying what he did, but he knows he needs to make a show of how he apologizes to show that he's still 'one of the good guys'. He fucked up and it was used to teach the lesson that even progressive people can say inappropriate things. His first guest even directly addresses this point by talking about guys who "put in work" and "earn a free pass", but are good enough not to use it. I doubt anyone got their feelings hurt by what Bill said, but it went against a narrative and he, for a moment, wasn't playing for the team correctly.
