Perhaps, but a part of it I think has more to do with how he hasn't been given the chance to go fully grim and dark beyond his Spanish language films.
Hellboy would have definitely benefited from an R rating, but obviously (for the time) it didn't get one, thus hindering the darkness that's associated with the property and necessary for a proper adoption.

I'm fine with the fact that Guts' edginess was retroactively justified, all I'm saying is that in Black Swordsman he's unreasonably edgy compared to how he usually is and it's clear the character wasn't planned out at the time, even ignoring the fact that Miura said outright that he didn't plan much of it early on. Even the attempt to humanize him in Black Swordsman is dumb and feels forced. It would be different if he behaved a bit more like he does in Conviction where his behavior feels natural for the character, but in Black Swordsman the sole goal was to make Guts cool.

Everything about the Witcher series, from the setting to the writing to the characters to the """""fantasy""""" is an ode to the modern day butchering of medieval customs, both in the real medieval world and in traditional medieval fantasy, for the sake of making money off of disenfranchised young males.
It should come as no surprise that both the writer of the books and the developer of the games are both from Poland, a country with a cultural and historical heritage that has been annihilated throughout history by various parties.

The poles have abbrogated the creation of a truly compelling plot based off of actual traditional European fantasy (like what Tolkein masterfully pulled off with Rings) in favor of boring overdone monster-hunting schlock by characters with anime hair.

A lot of it did bother me, but at least it's somewhat justifiable. My reaction to that was similar to the characters in-story, I was overwhelmed.

I remember posting in a thread in /tv/ where everyone was going on about how epic Berserk was so I watched the anime, it was not bad. I do have one question though.
