Anything by Koreeda.
Also Solanin is pretty comfy. As is Kiniro You (Yellow Elephant). Anything with Aoi Miyazaki or Kengo Kora is pretty good, actually. Check out A Story of Yonosuke and Norwegian Wood, as well.
These should be good starting point for modern day Japanese cinema.

Series or movie first?
Star Wars
>>83656573
Depends. There's three seasons which aired in japan with the same cast and stuff but they can be difficult to find. Those were followed by the movies and recently followed by the international "season 1" which is actually season 4.
Most of the stories are self contained though so you can watch it as you want mostly.
I'd say start with the netflix series since that has the highest production value and the actors have kinda settled into their characters a bit so you'll get a feel for if you want to watch the older stuff.
>>83656820
Yeah, I could only find the netflix series. I could probably track down the older series, but you seriously think I should go the netflix copies first?
I am a huge fan of Koreeda and based on the trailer it has the feel of his films.
If you're looking for a good show check out midnight dinner: tokyo stories it's pretty comfy

This movie made me so sad
>>83651413
Oh GOD I hope we do
>>83656896
It's up to you, man.
Chronologically you should go with the movie before the netflix series and the movie is pretty easy to find on torrents.
