>"y-you've been L-Lynched!"

Does anyone in the film world receive a longer artistic rope than this man?

Does anyone in the film world provide his fans more fodder with which to demonstrate their self-importance and "supreme" abilities to understand art?

I happen to like Lynch but his fanbase particularly on /tv/ is pure, unadulterated cancer.

I mean, I'm pretty sure that the entire point of Lynch's artistic value is that his movies have no deeper meaning; they're just demonstrations of the human mind rather than explorations. Which is fine, but anybody who says they understand his movies on a deeper level is talking out of their ass.

I haven't seen anything on S3 yet, but is it Inland Empire levels or is it less interesting?
>>
>>83609586

David Lynch is above criticism because he puts himself above it. His works are intentionally surreal and open to interpretation, and he refuses to offer explanations to people because he wants people to think for themselves and come up with their own personal meanings to glean from his work. It's a waste of time to criticize Lynch from any kind of standard technical perspective because doing so misses the point. It's like looking at a surrealist painting and criticizing it for not having a definite, strict meaning that makes perfect sense to everyone who views it.

In conclusion, you've been Lynched.
>>
>>83613537
I mean, I think you could criticize Lynch if you criticize how he accomplishes what he is aiming to accomplish. You might have a point that it is hard to tell what he is trying to accomplish but you could still do it. The problem is most people just criticize it like you said for not having a definite, strict meaning which is like criticizing an apple for not being a steak.
>>
>>83609586
Because most criticism is just the usual "BORING NOTHING HAPPENS SO PRETENTIOUS AND RANDUMB LMAOOO" meaningless comment.
>>
>>83613747
>I think you could criticize Lynch if you criticize how he accomplishes what he is aiming to accomplish. You might have a point that it is hard to tell what he is trying to accomplish but you could still do it.

I suppose that's a fair point, but as you went on to say I have yet to hear that kind of criticism, which honestly would require a pretty in-depth analysis to actually get into. The criticisms I hear are things like, "I don't get it! Why did that happen? What does this scene mean? That thing is inconsistent!" It's people overthinking shit and demanding answers out of something that's literally designed to be open to interpretation, and which is more about the journey than the destination, which I think is where the idea of "Lynched" comes from.
>>
Don't watch it fagget
>>
>>83609798
I'll bite. Its a shorthand, because the criticisms are on such a basic level, complaining about things people were discussing about his films 20 years ago very rudimentarily, its not worth the time and effort to engage with. So people skip it and opt to meme it up. Naturally, when people show up and just observe this some of them don't get it and just copy them and it all becomes this amorphous nonsense
>>
>>83613537
>make convoluted stuff that makes no sense
>it's """surreal""" aka put things together yourself and find sense in this mess that never had it
>woah this is truly deep
>>
>>83613970
I agree honestly. I think it shows that Lynch is actually a very good director and not just a meme. I think he accomplishes what he is trying to accomplish for the most part.
>>
>>83614063
Lynch is more about the experience, not about a linear plot "that makes sense" which you can just retell to your buddies in a few sentences.
Films by Tarkovsky are similar in that way too, it's all about the experience.
>>
>>83609586
Lynch's only good film (kino on /tv/) is The Elephant Man. All of his other work besides maybe Twin Peaks and Mullholland Drive are self important wanking by Lynch. Especially that shit Inland Empire. Which made Blue Velvet and FWWM seem like genius films by comparison. Lynch is counterfeit cinema. Thay kid that wants to have that really edgy/"weird" taste in film and feel special from it while not knowing the lesser know, lesser appreciated surrealists is the average Lynch Mega-Fan average. Lynch is way too over-rated but not horrible like some idiots claim. Great intro to surrealism. Surrealism for Dummies.
>>
>>83614063
>I hate thinking about things, just give me all the answers!

Have you ever thought that some people take joy in dissecting and discussing things? That maybe it's not about being "so deep and intelligent" but rather that the heavy use of surrealism and symbolism might be a spark to someone's creativity and exploring that could just be plain interesting or fun to that person?

I do feel like Lynch has a clear picture of things in his own mind for how he sees things, but from watching interviews with him I get a genuine sense that he doesn't hold his own interpretations as any more important or valid than any other person's. His refusal to explain himself doesn't seem to come from a place of "Fuck you, I ain't gotta explain shit!" But more from a place of "Well, what do YOU think about it?" And that's something I and many others enjoy and latch onto.

Maybe it's not your thing, but not understanding this perspective is no reason to just tear everything down in a fit. Maybe Lynch just isn't for you and you'd prefer entertainment with more clear or prescribed meanings. There's nothing wrong with that. Neither method is superior, they just have different ways to approach them.
>>
>>83614252
The Elephant Man is the least "Lynch" film he ever made, it's basically a bleak hollywood oscar bait with the usual linear narrative and structure.

It's not a bad movie per se, but certainly not even close to something like Mulholland Drive in terms of cinematic and general artistic worth.

How is Blue Velvet self indulgent? On the surface level it's a straight suburb detective story with some sexual stuff sprinkled on it. If you'd read a synopsis without having seen the movie you wouldn't suspect it was made by a surrealist filmmaker.

I just saw Lost Highway last night.

Yeah same here, the creepy man was kind of neat but the rest is everything from Mulholland Dr but not as fleshed out or gripping. Also Bill Pullman's character is shit compared to Naomi Watts, didn't really care what happened to him.
