I'm a native English speaker, but I find it difficult to watch something without subs. I can't understand what people are saying at times and I don't know anyone's name

If you do that kinda stuff, you shouldn't be allowed to make shit for TV.
It's common fucking sense to not do this.

And the ability to write and understand written text doesn't translate to the ability to understand spoken words, or the ability to speak.

OK mr perfect hearing, maybe you can hear a pin drop in the middle of an action scene, but some of us get bothered by the fact that in a scene with purely dialogue we might have to turn up the volume to follow the conversation easily, only to have the volume blaring way too loud in the next scene./

other languages often use different sentence structure so there's a high chance you're tricking yourself into hearing a word that's different from what you're reading as you follow along

A version of Rome's subtitles has these interesting tidbits, like what is the god they're talking about or the worth of coinage they're using and shit. Too bad they don't actually come to screen, it's just a "*" next to the word and it's a comment in the .srt file. You need to actually open the subtitle in notepad to read the tidbit. That's utterly ridiculous.

I think this has to do with the audio / visual / tactile learning preferences. I've always sucked with audible information absorption, words go in 1 ear and out the other but, if I'm reading along with what's being spoken then it's easy. This handicap also makes life harder than it needs to be as it has inhibited my conversation skills

that shit is mad gay but the solution shouldn't be subtitles since that comes with its own problems and is more like a tradeoff, the solution for that should be better sound design
>character speaks foreign
>it's not subtitled
>they want me to download a series
>they don't speak english, so I need translated subs
>oops there are no subtitles for the release I downloaded
>every episodes is synced to a different release
>have to manually check all 50 episodes to make sure the subs are not late (or even work at all)
AND THEN AFTER DOING THIS FOR YEARS I FOUND OUT MY SISTER WAS REGISTERED TO A SITE WITH EVERY FUCKING MOVIE DUBBED BUT MY MOM ASKED ME TO DOWNLOAD THEM ANYWAY BECAUSE SHE DIDNT WANT TO BE RUDE TO HER
AND WHEN MY GF DID THIS FOR MONTHS I LEARNED SHE SPOKE PERFECT ENGLISH ANYWAY SHE JUST WANTED ME TO DO EXTRA CHORES SO SHE FELT LIKE I CARED ABOUT HER
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Who the fuck uses subtitles? They spoil the punchline of jokes, they spoil the emotional impact of serious lines, and like OP's example they spoil unexpected events.
What's the matter? Mom asked you to keep the volume down?

Whenever there are subtitles for anything i have to read them for some reason and cant concentrate on the movie.

same. my sister will watch tv with massive subtitles that cover basically the whole screen except the face of whoever is talking. i don't get it. she's not hearing impaired.
