OK, now that I remember a bit more, this had pretty much all of Steve Lyons' best bits. Like when Mel tells Benny how the Doctor regenerated by falling down and hitting his head, and she laughs so hard she falls down and hits her head. And when either Ace or the Doctor dismisses the butterfly effect by telling Benny that at most it'll cause a minor change like a war starting an hour earlier or later or something, and then Benny kicks a can, and it causes a war to start an hour earlier, and millions more people die.

Nope. OldWho is my thing. I love the slow (by modern standards) pacing, the padding and the less than stellar production values. If anything, I feel that NuWho suffers from being to slick. Certainly the pacing doesn't allow time for the story to breathe and characters and situations to fully develop.

>>83494771
Most don't make any major changes, but some do.

The very late ones are significantly expanded, usually for the better. Some of the really early ones are different for no apparent reason. When the script was changed at the last minute, sometimes Terry or Ian didn't get the updates before novelising it, or the original writer wanted to novelise it himself and undo those changes.

Also, even when they don't make any major changes, sometimes just changing where the emphasis falls makes a big difference in how the story feel.
>>

Many of them elaborate on things that were only touched upon on TV and some things differ entirely. The description of The Candy Man in The Happiness Patrol springs to mind (Christopher Biggins would have been perfect )

>>83494886
I think there ought to be a happy medium between padding 90 minutes' worth of story out into 150 minutes over 6 weeks, or cramming 90 minutes' worth of story into a single 45-minute episode.

Yeah, and Moffat's basically tried everything he can to make that work, from the almost-classic-serial-style 2-parters of S6a to the barely-connected 2-parters of S9, and it still doesn't go over any better than it did for RTD, except as the series finale. Which is sad.

But maybe once we get to the point where everyone but the diehard fans is waiting around to binge at least half a series at a time, they'll be more accepting of the 2-parters.

Dinosaurs was Moffat's idea; the writing for the characters wasn't great but they were more likeable than most of Steven's creations.

And Power is only really let down by a rushed finale.

It probably would change more if Chibs wanted to return to the romantic S2 thing, but hopefully he doesn't want to do that no matter what the sexes are.

He obviously enjoyed the role. And the producers were probably hesitant to loose him seeing how popular he made the series. Nowadays nuwho doctors tend to leave after 3 series to avoid being typecast, as well as it being quite an intensive filming routine with 12 work days.
>>
>>83495601
Tom didn't want to leave.

Williams considered dumping him, but he was so popular that it was too big of a risk—if the replacement wasn't just as popular, he'd look like an idiot—so he decided to just change the show around Tom instead.

JNT finally went the passive-aggressive route of trying to make Tom so miserable he'd leave of his own accord, so nobody could blame the producer for it.
>>
>>83495370
>Dinosaurs was Moffat's idea; the writing for the characters wasn't great but they were more likeable than most of Steven's creations.
The characters were flat and generic, with no character traits aside from humorous quirks. I'm no rabid Moffat enthusiast, but he can generally do better than that.

>And Power is only really let down by a rushed finale.
You say that as if an episode about a mystery didn't completely hinge on the resolution.
>>
>>83495713

The fifth Doctor was one of the worst-received Doctors. Doesn't help that Davison had that sex abuse scandal going on at the time, either.
>>
>>83495782
Davison was well liked, I think because people already knew him from another show and because he brought a new, youthful energy to the part. He was successful in taking over - and they made the wise move to go somewhere different with him, instead of trying to copy 4/Baker.

Tom became more of a prima donna every year, and also less professional, and the show was in danger of turning into "Tom shows up, elbows everyone else off-stage, and ad-libs some goofy Tom lines for 25 minutes".

Also, the show pretty much needs to change things up every few years. Basically the same reason you think the 4 era is daunting in retrospect. And, while Williams definitely found ways to change things up without replacing the star, regeneration is obviously the easiest way to do it.

Meanwhile, the show was coming under attack from Mary Whitehouse and some of the BBC execs for things that had nothing to do with Tom, but they could have probably gotten away with doing less on the writing end if they made a more visible change at the same time.

And finally, for JNT only, he wanted to change absolutely everything about the show as much as possible to put his stamp on it.

Davison was pretty well regarded when he was initially announced. He was a well-known and well-liked actor, much more so than any of the other Doctors. But his episodes were not as well-regarded, and pretty soon, people began to blame him for the problems. Until late in the wilderness years, when fandom reevaluated everything, people mostly referred to 5 as "the bland one".

Reception for the Peter Davison's Doctor was negative. His casting came before the infamous abuse allegations that pretty much ended his career. By the time his episodes were aired, public perception of the actor was already skewed in a bad way.

At first, yes. In fact, S19 (Davison's first) had much better ratings and AI than S18 (Baker's last). But it dropped off pretty rapidly with S20.

And I think the move to Monday/Tuesday really hurt things. In part because the BBC didn't actually advertise the change very clearly—everyone knew that the first episode of Castrovalva was on Monday instead of Saturday, but a lot of people didn't know that there was another episode the next day. Which is probably why most of the serials in S19-20 had a great episode 1 but not nearly as good a serial-wide average.

Of course there was a lot more going on. Saward's script editing, JNT refusing to let Saward hire any old writers besides Robert Holmes, budget cuts, Adric and Tegan being pretty unpopular companions, JNT not being able to attract good new directors because he had no clout and the show not much more… But I think the schedule change was one of the biggest problems.

I blame Cloister and /who/. hes infested this general from the beginning. always blogging and making shit about himself. circle jerking with other trips that are probably just him talking to himself and shutting out any relevant discussion, while the anons of /who/ stand by and do nothing or worse encouraging his and their faggotry. all the while conducting shitposting raids from the secret trip discord, 8ch and Skype when the anons finally turn against them. it's a precident that's effected the entire site. he thinks he runs/who/ and I think it's time we make a concerted effort to kill off these tripfags once and for all.
>>
>>83496289
By "ever so slight", are you talking about the episode-1-to-episode-2 drops, or the S19-to-S20 drop?

The latter is pretty blatant—after recovering from a below-6M average in S18 to well over 9M in S19, they dropped back to around 7M for S20 and stayed there until the hiatus nearly killed the show.

But yes, I'll agree that the episode-2 problem is a lot more subtle. Still, the "I missed episode 2" complaint was common enough to be part of the public dialogue about the show. It felt like more effort to keep up with the show, and I think that's part of the reason a bunch of people gave up after one year. (Again, by no means the only reason.)

>>83496392
Yeah, conventional wisdom is that The Twin Dilemma was so bad, and so jarringly wrong for Doctor Who, that people fled in droves. But that didn't actually happen. Ratings declined slightly over the course of S22, then ironically rebounded when the news of the hiatus put Doctor Who back on the front page, then fell off catastrophically after the hiatus and never came back. The failure of the show is 90% Michael Grade's fault, not Colin's or Saward's or JNT's or Pip & Jane's.
>>
Okay so there was no Peter Davidson sex scandal but there was that trick he played on Janet Fielding when he first met her that apparently caused her to bare her breastises. I bet some of the more toxic areas of the fandom would be foaming at the mouth if something like that happened nowadays.
>>
>>83496516
Colin Baker also bit Nicola Bryant's bottom during Dilemma filming. Troughton and Hines often played pranks too, on one occasion pulling Wendy Padbury's pants down.
>>
>>83496500
>The failure of the show is 90% Michael Grade's fault, not Colin's or Saward's or JNT's or Pip & Jane's.
Well, all of the BBC execs hated JNT (to the point where they got into arguments about whether he should "fix the show without our help or fuck off and die" or "just fuck off and die"), and Grade had personal beef with Colin, so they're not entirely irrelevant. But otherwise, yeah.
>>
>>83496558
>Troughton and Hines often played pranks too, on one occasion pulling Wendy Padbury's pants down.
Hines is the one who got directly pantsed by Troughton.

Padbury, they unfastened her skirt while she was napping so it fell off when she stood up, and she wasn't wearing pants under.

Capaldi was announced on 4 August, and first appeared in the anniversary special.

13 will first appear a month later than that, so why would you expect the actor to be announced more than 2 months earlier?

They may do it a bit closer to the end of episode 12 just to keep a buzz train going instead of trying to restart one, but there's no reason to do it before then.

Capaldi said he'd already filmed his death, but it's not as simple as it sounds. And of course we saw him starting to regenerate in the "coming this series" trailer.

All evidence is that it's going to be this week, not the finale, and it's going to be some kind of fake-out or other, but there are a few people who really want to believe the Christmas special is going to have no Doctor in it, or a 13 who's then replaced by Chibs' 14, or be all flashbacks, or whatever.

The only possibility I've worked out for capaldi regenerating in s10 and appearing in the xmas special is that he's mentally rejected the fact that he's regenerated and thus appears on screen as the 12th doctor still (even though he's already changed in reality at this point). It's only at the end where he finally accepts the fact he's regenerated and welcomes his new face do we finally see him as 13.

It's not impossible that the regeneration scene we saw is episode 12, or even that there will be two separate regenerations in one series without changing the Doctor yet. But neither of those seems very likely.

If they did want to have him regenerate at the end of episode 12, there are lots of possibilities:
>Your idea.
>Regenerates, but it's a fakeout of some kind.
>Starts regenerating, holds it off for a short time. (Christmas could end less than a day after ep12—or, conversely, 3 took at least weeks if not decades to regenerate into 4, so there's precedent for as long as they want.)
>Regenerates, Christmas is a flashback story (or even a convoluted series of flashbacks which are only mostly 12 but have a surprise scene with 1 or 11 or whatever).
>Regenerates, Time Lords grab him out of the middle of his regeneration and Christmas is a season-6B-type story.
>Regenerates into special-guest-star 13, who can't handle being the Doctor so he has 12 in his mind telling him what to do all episode, then finally picks a new still-13 persona (Romana-style) since it's still the first 18 hours.
>Regenerates, then immediately has a multi-Doctor special (and Moffat was lying and he and Chibs cowrite it).
>Fails to regenerate and dies, Christmas is him somehow undoing S6-style that so he regenerates instead.

And probably more besides.

But again, it seems much more likely that we're just going to get the mid-series fakeout regeneration, and then he won't really regenerate until Christmas.

I'm making my way through Classic Who and just finished up Season 20. I'm actually really enjoying Davison. A couple of his serials are bland, yes, and Time-Flight was an abhorrent abortion, but some of his serials have been 8 or 9 out of 10.

I'd say so far he's doing better than Tom was during his worst Williams era serials

Also from what I read he had some of the highest ratings the show ever saw in S19 (apart from the freak ratings they got around City of Death because ITV were on strike)

Time-Flight and Terminus were shit but The Visitation, Black Orchid, Mawdryn Undead and Enlightenment were all fantastic, even if Visitation is pretty run-of-the-mill

If all you saw was Four To Doomsday and Arc of Inifinity you'fd be forgiven for thinking Davison was boring

Also I like Tegan and I even thought Adric was somewhat-semi-okay, while Nyssa went from "I have no emotions and my eyes look like they aren't actually focussed on anything" to giving two fantastic performances in Arc of Infinity and her goodbye

These look so cheap and plastic, I hope they look better in the show

>Four To Doomsday
Is it just how I remember it or is there actually an entire episode that consists of nothing but ethnic dancing?

That's because they are cheap and plastic

>Also from what I read he had some of the highest ratings the show ever saw in S19
S19 definitely was a big rebound after S18, but it wasn't back to S17 levels (even minus City of Death), or S12-14, or S2. For example, all but the lowest-rated story of S14 would be in first place compared to S19.

Still, the late-80s groupthink that "Davison started the death of the ratings because it got boring" wasn't based on S19, it was based on him losing most of those new/returned viewers before S20, and they never came back again.
>>
>>83500524
Nah that actually happened
Also the Doctor violates the laws of physics (depending on who you ask) propelling himself through space on an office chair with a cricket ball

There have been a couple "fucking nothing" cliffhangers where the episode just kind of ends because it has to in Davison's era, and a couple "Nyssa screams", ones, but there have also been a couple of the show's best (Turlough jumping off the edge)

The Black Guardian is shit and overacts and Turlough is a Tory

Hmm, interesting. I can imagine people switching off after 7 years of Baker and 20 years of Who itself, even though I think the show is still pretty good at this point.

I was talking about the Davison era to my parents and mentioned "the Australian who complains a lot" and they both thought I was talking about Peri - neither of them knew who Tegan was.

Apparently there was an episode of Pointless shortly before our conversation and Tegan was a pointless answer for "doctor who companions."

I like Tegan :(

Do you? Why?

You try to avoid people screaming as their faces get smashed in by hammers/their necks get sliced by rusty chainsaws/the cybermen inject the population with the AIDS virus in a children's show

There is a difference between fantasy horror and real horror. The closest Doctor Who got to real horror in recent years was Don't Cremate Me, which did spook me and got a handful of complaints

Sure, I could see people bailing after 7 years of Baker—but then why did S19 actually see millions of people come back, before half of them went away again for S20?

Really, any explanation that makes sense fails to explain the actual numbers.
>>
>>83500846
Maybe out of morbid curiosity to see what the new Doctor was like, or maybe it was promoted well? Maybe there were three million people who couldn't stand Baker and wanted to watch again after they got rid of him

Maybe the move from Saturday to Monday/Tuesday was a good thing (temporarily)
>>
>>83500882
Yeah, but those are still sketchy answers. For example, would morbid curiosity really make 3 million people watch for an entire season, but 2 million of those give up again all, at the same time, at the end of the season?

My favourite contemporary-ish answer came from DWB (I think by Paul Cornell): DWM readers liked Time-Flight, and when people heard that, millions decided they simply couldn't endorse a show whose fans were that stupid.

There was also a letter that blamed Time-Flight for a different reason: Adric was mentioned in episode 1, and then appeared as a hallucination in episode 2, and millions of people thought, seriously, even after you kill that twat off, he's still going to keep showing up? I quit.
>>
>>83500681
I like Tegan too. She's such a stroppy cow.
>>
>>83501237
Hmm I don't know, Cornell's answer seems a little tongue-in-cheek. Time-Flight WAS absolutely, completely, disastrously terrible, so I can imagine a few people switching off after that one. The Adric thing... I doubt that too. Maybe?

What was Who's competition during this time? That could explain it, people wanting to watch newer and more exciting things.

Also, as you'll see from my post in the other thread, Davison's ratings remained steady at 7m for 20 and 21, which is 1 or 2m higher than Baker managed in 19

>>83501397
Me too. I liked how she was in out of her depth and just wanted to get home, but eventually grew fond of the Doctor and their travels
>>
>>83500462
Do you think they're wearing dancer belts so there's no bulge?
>>
>>83501434
Cornell's answer and the letter to the editor were 100% tongue-in-cheek. DWB was always more about trolling anyone who liked JNT, DWM, or the DWAS than about actually being fans. Kind of like the 80s equivalent of /who/.

Meanwhile, synthesizing each season down to a single number:

S17: 11M
S18: 6M
S19: 9M
S20: 7M
S21: 7M
S22: 7M

So, yeah, S20-21 were better than S18, but worse than any other Tom year—and, more importantly, basically identical to Colin's first full year, the year that was so bad it got the show put on hiatus.

(Except, of course, the ratings and the quality aren't actually the reasons the show was put on hiatus, which is the first place fan explanations always go wrong.)

Yeah I've seen a couple of the documentaries and it seems the BBC/Micheal Grade just wanted Doctor Who to die, and were given an excuse to kill it

It's interesting to see fan opinion on Saward - so far, my impression of him is positive. I liked The Visitation and Earthshock, and Resurrection and Revelation of the Daleks were fine from what I remember. And he script edited on some very strong serials, but then again is also partially responsible for Time Shite.

JNT seems to be doing pretty well so far as well - production values shot up in S18 and there were some very strong stories. I'm waiting for him to cock everything up.

I don't like The Black Guardian or Turlough but everything else about Mawdryn and Enlightenment made up for them, and Turlough's redemption was a pretty powerful moment
