Yeah, in literal vaults with HDDs of unedited footage that are completely sealed off from the Internet (if digital) or in climate controlled storage (if film negatives). And every major production studio has their own vault(s). Indie filmmakers typically don't adhere to these kind of standards because they don't have the money to pay for it, though.

If you wanted to hack/steal that shit, you'd have to sneak into *one* studio's vault at a time, Mission Impossible style, and you would have to know exactly where to look to find what you wanted.

How is this the ONLY way to do it? If someone had legitimate access to the vault and decided to go rogue they could just walk right past the security guards. If they keep a log of everyone that comes in and out though you'd have to find a way to avoid it being tracked back to you.

Hardly anyone has legitimate access to the vaults. The archived raw footage exists for posterity and copyright purposes as well as future remasters / directors cuts. And yeah they definitely log every time the footage is accessed.

Even the original directors do not have access to the unedited footage from their own movies; not without specifically getting permission from the studio to use it for a project that has been approved by said studio.

No one would risk their career and jail time for this.
