It starts out great and gets steadily worse. If Barbossa is your favorite character you might have a hard time enjoying the second movie. Davy Jones is cool though, so enjoy his presence. Because come the fourth movie nothing is cool or fun anymore.

Saw 5 today. Had seen 1 and 2 in theaters, and skipped 3 and 4. The production values are still really good, and the action scenes are really fun. That bank heist was hilarious. Are the ones I missed good as well?

3 is a clusterfuck that hastily ends plotlines that 2 hastily started, but it's a decent flick if only for more Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, decent action, production values, and getting more of the interesting world they live in.

4 is kinda boring and almost completely insulated from the rest of the series, Barbossa is the only thing in it of any real consequence in the series at large. Ian McShane as Blackbeard was the only part I really enjoyed, I love hearing that guy talk.

3 gets far more shit than it deserves. Becoming more grimdark isn't great and the pirate mafia is pretty stupid but beyond that it's as good as 2.

They're the kind of movies that have everything they need to be 10/10 classics, but don't have the restraint to make it work. Imagine that the LOTR trilogy had many more goofy Hobbit scenes in.

First one is great.
Second one was a long goofy rescue scene that goes nowhere, plus a very long fight at the end that also goes nowhere.
Third one goes way overboard with plots, betrayals and Jack / Woodeye shenanigans, but it has an amazing third act.
The fourth one feels like it ran out of steam, everything is there yet it lacks energy or likable new characters.
