I feel like the premise of the world vs and alien race has a lot of potential for a great summer blockbuster and there are several ways of approaching it. However they don't seem to take advantage of this and most times they do, it's shit. I can only name 3 that can be considered good
>independence day
>war of the worlds
>battle Los Angeles
>>
>>83344564
Because (((they))) don't like them
>>
>we will never get a WotWs movie based off the book

They always end up fucking it up
>>
There's been a few over the last couple of years and they haven't really done that well have they

edge of tomorrow was great
independence day 2 bombed
avengers 1 was basically an alien invasion movie and did very well
>>
>>83344675
Honestly WotW 2005 was good until they get to the farm house, then it's shit until the military destroyes the tripod at the end
>>
>>83344626
Basically this. We're fast approaching peak civilization, and a lot of people are starting to wake up to the notion that mass immigration REALLY isn't doing us any favors.

A film about ANY kind of invasion is almost impossible to not draw comparisons to. (((They))) really, really don't want people to remember what an invasion even is, let alone be able to draw comparisons.
>>
>>83344737
Edge of tomorrow was post invasion. I want to see the actual invasion
Avengers doesn't count because it's a super hero movie. I want to see the worlds armies fight.
>>
>>83344564

War of the Worlds is a masterpiece. Only plebs disagree.

Yeah. A bunch of ferries are evacuating civilians when three tripods show up. It seems like everyone is fucked, but an iron clad breaks formation with the other escort vessels.

The aliens are confused and try to gas the ironclad, to no avail. It rams one tripod then broadsides another. It gets heat beamed before ramming the 3rd, leaving the fate of the final tripod ambigious, but the ferries and other naval vessels get away.

>Why aren't there more films, and why are almost none of them good?
ftfy

But seriously, most films are bad. Why would the alien invasion genre be safe from that?

I liked the first Avengers and first Transformers, if you count either of those as alien invasion.
Mars Attacks! is a satire so up to you whether that's any good. Same deal with The World's End, the Edgar Wright one.
I enjoyed Cloverfield a lot, but it's unclear as to whether that's an alien life-form or not.
Edge of Tomorrow, Man of Steel and Signs are all fairly well-received but I wasn't really a fan of any of them. They all feature alien invasions, though.

There's also Dreamcatcher, which isn't very good but has some really cool concepts going on with some very enjoyable bits. Based on a Stephen King book, but I haven't read it.

I'd go see a period-accurate WotW in a split second.

they could pull off a really creepy industrial look that stands just as strong as the 05's like sleek biomech? tripods.

could be even creepier in that in the book they attack with chemical weapons as well as the heat rays.
>>
>>83353032
Effects where good (for its budget), but there there was no character
>>
Alien invasion movies are a dumb concept. Any species capable of interstellar travel would have technology so beyond what humanity is capable of that it wouldn't even be a fight. They could nuke us from orbit, drop self replicating nanomachines to cleanse the surface, infect the population with superviruses. It'd be over before we even knew it.
>>
>>83353329
Define industrial, because if it's steam punk, then I think it will flop.
>>
>>83353384
>implying the aliens aren't here for the humans themselves, so creating a super virus, sending and asteroid, or nuking the whole planet would defeat the purpose.

>>83344990
They had ONE job and didn't.
>>
>>83353314
The first part of Dreamcatcher was amazing.
>>
>>83353565
Well like in WotW, they could want humans for their blood
>>
Why would they invade? If they can Travel faster than light they can create whatever they want, why would they go for all that trouble if they can make water, slaves, ore, etc in their replicating machines.
>>
>>83353975
Why do people hunt?
They can go to store and buy any food they want, already prepared for them and with less time/effort.

Hunting people is fun anon.
This was the only thing I liked about Independence Day 2
>They like to get the landmarks...
>>
>>83348853
THis
>>
>>83353780
Aliens would also either be superintelligent AIs or already have them. Effort would be a non-issue. And nukes are way easier than invasion.

And if the US went around dropping nukes it could destabilize the world and trigger full scale nuclear war. Instead it wanted to set up puppet governments as leverage against the rogue states in the region.
>>
>>83353907
They could mass produce blood far more easily through genetic engineering.
>>
how the fuck has this not been mentioned
blows the absolute shit out of everything else ITT
disappointing thread
>>
>>83344564
Because the idea is fundamentally flawed.

If aliens somehow managed to traverse the cosmos and reach our planet, it means they are much much more advanced than us. They would have mastered faster-than-light travel or quantum tunneling. We would literally be ants to them.
>>
>>83354044
That's a dumb reason. And they'd have virtual realities where they could live out these scenarios.
>>
>>83354044
>Why do people hunt?
Hunting is cheaper and healthier than processed or factory farmed food and populations of certain wild animals need to be controlled somehow while the food in the store still needed to be hunted or farmed by someone else.
>>
>>8335397
That isn't necessarily true. Developing technology that could generate wormholes doesn't mean they'd be advanced in other ways.

Also it could just as easily be an aggressive species that stole the technology from a long dead hyper-advanced species for the purpose of conquest.
>>
>>83354235

>that scene in WotW where the military is sacrificing itself in vain to let civilians escape

not even gonna argue the retardation of the civilians running towards the battle. cool scene visually, but the premise of the military sacrificing itself against an enemy they cannot currently defeat triggered me.

i want to see a version where the military realizes that they are actually more valuable than the civilians, as the personnel/equipment will be needed when a weakness is found. i want to see one where the military basically fucks off into hiding and leaves the civilians to fend for themselves.
>>
>>83354634
What if they were just barely capable of interstellar travel?

Like they reached Earth via generational ships that used nuclear bombs for propulsion, or solar sails. Or if their species was naturally able to induce hibernation for any length of time?
>>
>>83354506
>Why doesn't everyone on Star Trek spend their life in a holodeck?
There is only one holodeck on the ship, if it were that easy to make and didn't require massive resources to operate, every cabin would be a holodeck, but it isn't due to scarcity.

People seek pleasure and avoid pain, but the thresholds are different for each individual, so to some the pain of being tricked into the vr and the hard limits still set on its operation outweighs the pleasure of simulated happiness.

there isn't enough light to cross interstellar space just with a solar sail alone. you'd need a big ass laser to push it and then you might as well point it on a planet to cook its inhabitants alive.

Probably because WotW is half alien invasion, half hiding-in-a-church-with-a-crazy-guy.

It's a giant parallel of WW1 and what the invaded peoples felt like, which doesn't work in America at all.

It was an analogy to the British Empire. Basically what if the most powerful invasive force on Earth (at the time)was itself invaded by forced immeasurably superior in firepower and technology, much like the Brits were to African tribes or the like.

It's why I think a modern adaption in America actually works really well because at the moment, America is in a similar position to the British Empire in terms of size and technological advantage over their enemies. I think the commentary is the core to War of the Worlds so you have to adapt it to fit modern times. So instead of the Martians colonizing earth with the red weed in Imperial Britain, you could have the Martians simply harvesting Earth's resources (oil if you want to make it really on the nose)

I have a soft spot for Skyline. The dialogue is terrible and it's cliched as fuck, but the invasion is brilliant. They're just harvesters milking the planet for all that it has as efficiently as possible. It's pretty much how I imagined a realistic alien invasion would be. We wouldn't stand a chance and they would have the harvesting down to a fine art from plenty of experience.

You should probably get weapons but they'd be babby tier against a tripod. You use them against psychos who lost all of their morality, and against the occasional martian bold enough to fuck around outside its tripod.

Also, there are different tripod classes suited for different roles.

And the martians themselves should look absolutely grotesque, like borderline make-you-puke-just-by-looking-at-them nasty.
