his relationship with his wife was unhealthy because he was a co-dependent loser who wasn't really living his life. she was just using him to stay clean and trying to live what she thought was a normal life. the marriage was inherently flawed and thats what he realized at the end. he only gets his ass kicked a few times in the movie and dishes it out way more gruesomely than he takes it.

i liked that part of the film, it showed you don't have to be a bad ass to fuck people up, you just need a big ass wrench.
