What happened to the Body Horror genre? Why is it that special effects have increased in quality in many regards but we haven't had any good body horror movies in ages?
>>
>>83289406
Desensitization. Also it's just kind of out of style, it comes off as campy these days. It's not cutting edge anymore.
>>
>>83289406
is that from slither?
>>
>>83289406
dude thats gross i'd rather watch generic low budget horror film #12 where there's a ghost that opens its mouth really wide
>>
>>83289445

>campy

This. Only body horror movie I've ever seen that didn't come across as campy and borderline comedy is The Thing.
>>
>>83289406
Cgi can't make good body horror
>>
>>83289468
>>83289445
I think that has far more to do with how garbage many of the latest entries into the genre have been over the years.
>>
>>83289406
Gross-out horror is just not in style right now. The last big body horror release was what, Evil Dead?
>>
>>83289445

The sheer amount of torture porn garbage has run it into the ground.
>>
>>83289810

>>
The Void was propably the best body horror movie in the last 10 years or so. Obviously the best ones are from the 70s-80s and maybe some from the 90s.
I asked myself why there aren't any body horror movies anymore, too. And i have no idea desu. I guess the genre is just dead and no one wants to invest in it anymore. It really became a niche thing. There's like maybe one or two watchable body horror movies coming out per year lately, the other are c-movie shit with bad cgi.

I rewatched The Fly (1986) last week and it's still great. There's something comfy about practical effects and a simple story told well.

Is that the one with the creepy kid in it?

just make a shit horror movie, and add only a LITTLE BIT of body horror. That way, normies will be clamoring about that scene for a couple of days until the focus of their gold fish brains returns to their iDroids.
>>
>>83289406
Body Horro "works" with practical effects, even if they look clearly fake and plastic. CGI would simply make it look meh.
>>
>>83290637

Tetsuo isn't disgusting but it is essential body horror.

The Thing prequel, but it sucked.
They actually filmed it with pretty good practical effects, but then in post production just cgi-d everything.

With practical effects, even if it doesnt completely convince the audience that it is flesh and blood and bone, it is still there in the scene. CGI usually looks like it isnt even physically there, let alone real flesh.

>>83289406
production costs on ghosts and other spooky invisible creature movies are cheaper. all of those movies also have cut down locations. it's the lesson of cheap shitty movies like blair witch or paranormal activity.

And what kind of drinks was he mixing, I don't drink alcoholic beverages and haven't really ever gone to a bar where the bar tenders were mixing drinks. Although, I did watch that Coyote Ugly movie a long time ago, I think that had some drink/alcoholic beverage mixing in that movie, it didn't make me want to drink, just made me stay home watching the movie.

And every day he does something retarded.

Sorry you're triggered that all people want to talk about "these days" is one of the most historically significant political scandals in constitutional American history.

I appreciated it a lot. Like they start with this kind of slow procedural type of thing and it's a relatively slow build that plays it pretty straight considering the third act reveal that holy fuck the movie is gory and the troglodytes are legitimately disturbing.

Like Dusk til Dawn or Audition, I think a super effective way to tell a horror story is to trick the audience by lulling them into a sense of security by being convinced they're watching one genre, then pulling the rug out from underneath them.

Like I want to see a Judd Apatow comedy that turns on a dime at the second act midpoint into just a nihilistic torture porn film that never looks back. Like Martyrs but the first half is James Franco trying to get laid and a promotion or whatever with lots of improv yucks and the second he gets skinned alive for 30 minutes and is shot in the dick.

I've had this opinion for a long time and I think this is the first time I've seen anyone else express it so well.
The idea of a movie abruptly changing its tone/genre or even having an ending that's completely unexpected based on the content of the rest of the movie has so much potential.
I think it could also be very effective in video games. I know people here will crucify me and tell me games are for kids but I'd be interested in seeing a game that isn't totally spoiled by its pre-release marketing, something that has tricks up its sleeve.
The only game I can think of that did this was Bloodborne, which is an absolute masterpiece and all the better for it.

I've always wanted to pioneer the 'Genre Shift' genre, where a movie is a multitude of genres. Pastiches done with conviction. Like a movie that starts off as a romantic comedy shifting into sci-fi horror before finally becoming an espionage kung-fu thriller. It's where the future is headed. The movement- the fun cinematic experience- that could kill capeshit.

Perfect example of Hollywood missing the point.

The most terrifying thing to some adults on an Argentinean Fly Fishing website was literally just a $2.00 box of black trash bags

If Creepshow 2 was remade, it would have cost thousands of dollars of CGI of the creature, look worse, kill the terror, and ruin the environment.

> Fucking Karl "ACTUAL COMMUNIST RESPONSIBLE FOR MILLIONS OF DEATHS" Marx.

all Marx did was sit around and philosophise about economics. It's only because people tried out his ideas (terribly, Marx intended for communism to be the next step for already developed nations, not skip straight from backwater shithole to Socialist utopia, but only poor and downtrodden people could be convinced that it would be an improvement).
