It's derivative. But not just a little, it's 100% derivative of directors like Refn, Malick, Lynch, etc. That wouldn't be so bad if there was actually meaning behind it all. Gosling doesn't convey a single original thought with this film, which makes it a pointless exercise in artistic masturbation. If you're into that then by all means love the film. Go watch it again. Watch it ten more times even. Watch it until you become so full of yourself that your head explodes.

I liked it, but this isn't far off. It's mostly pastiche and mostly hollow.

>Of various influences, not all of which I will name
Go watch it again and pat yourself on the back every time you spot something that reminds you of another director, you pleb.

this is true. I'd still say it's above average, probably a 6/10 for me
I haven't seen it, but I am willing to believe it's alright just because I've never heard criticism beyond "it reminds me of refn/lynch". Everyone was very excited when critics panned it on release with that exact line.

I'd be okay with most of it but the part in the club with the guy doing the music number is just so blatantly doing David Lynch, way too obvious.
Everything else is alright though.

I went into this movie expecting a 100% unrefined Goosegasm and that's what I got. I wouldn't have settled for anything less.

That part was my favourite scene. Ben Mendelsohn was absolutely great in this movie, infact my main criticism was there wasn't enough of him
